Ken, Happy Birthday! I get it now, the old garden hose treatment. I'm due for one in two years. I hate those things. I hope your tooth and insurance problems aren't too troublesome. I have no problem with dental insurance - I don't have any. :( My dentist is good though and only charges me the minimum Blue Cross rate. Dianna is improving rapidly, to the point she wanted a shake and burger from McDonald's and then tried to convince my youngest to get her another shake on her way home from work. I think she'll live another day.

BOC, I'd really like to see that road. I think I've got mine as good as it's going to get with the Mark IV version. The trouble is that it's hard to get it to look right in pictures. It looks pretty good in person, it really does. :)

Bob, you've got to slow down. More model railroading and less remodeling. I sure hope you get a nice gift for all this work. I need to do my deck next year and it's a task I'm not looking forward to. The Alabama sun is hard on decks so it will have to be pressure washed and probably sanded. The dang thing is 45 feet long by 10 feet wide so that's a lot of wood. The deck is also nailed and most of the nails are popping so I'll have to screw it all down as well. Glad your boat situation is taken care of. When we had plans to sail the Caribbean, we were getting a 45 foot catamaran. Strangely enough, there was one corner of the cockpit that had this 2x4 space just sitting there, doing nothing. I was already drawing track plans. :D

Jeffrey, any meal that can last for three other meals and only costs $10 is a heck of a deal. Hardly pays to cook at those rate. That reminds me, I haven't been out to a Mexican restaurant lately and I've been craving a good carnitas burrito.

Just had a strange little line of showers pop up out of nowhere and go through. Not much rain but better than nothing. The high was only 79 today, which is the coolest high we've had since mid-June. I have to go to the urologist to follow up with my bleeding episode of a few weeks ago. I'm sure she'll want to do a cystoscopy. I'll have to find out exactly what kind she wants to do since there's one that uses a flexible scope that isn't bad with just some lodging and another that uses a rigid scope and I want to be knocked out for that. Why is it that getting old means people are always wanting to stick things up your various body orifices?

Rex, that tornado footage you sent me is real. There's a thread about it at http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13343&highlight=tornado. I'm still not sure why that rear unit had a dash cam running but I guess that's getting to be more common. I'm also surprised that that the DS didn't warn the crew that a tornado was on the ground since I'm sure they are on the emergency notification system. They could have at least slowed the train down. From the footage, it looks like the train maintained the same speed until it was actually struck by the tornado.

Good morning.

It's 66 and clear. The high will be around 90 and it will be partly cloudy.

Today I'll be continuing a couple of projects I was working on yesterday. I need to finish up the new Athearn boxcar. It needs a coat of Matte-Finish and a set of Kadee #5 couplers. Right now it has the cheapee McHenry couplers which I had on it through the weathering process to (1) keep paint from getting into coupler pockets, wadded up paper towel doesn't work all that well. (learned this the hard way) and (2) if a coupler is going to get locked up by paint or whatever I'd much rather it be a cheap piece of junk than a more expensive Kadee. I also need to 'rust up' the axles and the backsides of the wheels. Project #2 is a N Scale tank car I tore down yesterday. I used the Dremel to remove as much of the molded on handrails and grabs as I could get to and now I need to get some fine sandpaper so I can hand sand it smooth. I'll be using it as a HO Scale propane tank. Today is also grocery shopping day so I'll be doing that as well. That's fine, I'll be able to get the Matte-Finish and the sandpaper at the same time. I'll be starting another weathering project today as well. My Bachmann Boise-Cascade all-door boxcar is way too clean and needs some dirtying up so it looks more like my Bachmann Southern all-door boxcar. There are also 2 DPM kits that require my attention. One is the 'Robert's Dry Goods' building (#10200) and the other is the 'Front Street' building (#12000) and I have 2 packs of DPM modular walls to play with.

Good Morning--

We got lotsa sun and a high of 24C today---right now ---off our lovely deck it is ---oh--it dropped a degree---8C

Steven is going with me up to the university so he can get his student card and such----he also has to get his stuff moved into the residence---and I can have my trainroom back----:D

Have a good one people----:D:D

It's called "Super....." something or other.
It is called Super Clean. Generics of virtually the same stuff are called Purple Stuff and Purple Power. Full-strength, it can remove paint on model trains and real automobiles. Don't ask how I know this...

Jim, this is my part of being the administrator of Tom's estate. I got his trains, his truck, and his guns. His kids said I could have any other miscellaneous items for my time. I am thinking about taking his layout. Don't know what I'd do with it, though. Good thing is that if I do take it, it's all modular an can be easily disassembled and stored. He has a TON of switches and buildings on it. I may be able to integrate some of it into my layout back home. I don't want to just strip it. It is nice, though, a u-shaped walk around, and a decent size.

I heard from an old member of our old club here in town that a group is trying to start it back up. I think, if they have any success at finding a place to meet, that donating it to them may be a good gesture. But, they have to get the club up and running before I commit. The membership sound like it will be abaout an even ssplit between N-scalers and HO guys. With a few of us fellas that model anything that they can model.

While working on the trim and stuff yesterday, I found two more boxes of train stuff at Tom's house. A bunch of N-scale and some O stuff. Quite a bit actually , including some track and accessories, power packs, rail and roadbed. I brought it home this AM to check it out.

There was quite a bit of N-scale trains, probably 150 different cars, structures, and engines. I never knew Tom was into N-scale. He probably got a deal somewhere, figuring that he might have a small layout sometime. The guy could get some bodacious deals sometimes. He once bought one of his(now mine) OMI PRR brass centipede at a train show in St. Louis for $150. Ya think I could get a deal like that? NEVER!!!! I get some good deals sometimes, but nothing near that good. The engine was distressed, didn't run. He found a cut wire and in 5 minutes it was running again. Incredible. And the wire was in plain sight, an obvious malfunction. Some people have all of the luck. And guess who supplied the piece of wire to fix it? Yep, Ol' Buddy Bob.

Well, gotta get back to work. I had to come home to pick up a few things I forgot this morning when I left. The better half had fixed some cinnamon rolls and I decided to sit down a bit, have a couple and a cup of coffee.Hopefully, I can knock off about noon and enjoy the rest of the day. I still need to get to Kokomo and get some train stuff.

Speak at you all later.

Bob

Went out and got the grocery shopping done. Most $1 TV dinners as the doc won't want me traipsing about in the kitchen much. So for a while it's just gonna be heat-n-eat. Also went to Lowe's and picked up a can of Valspar clear flat spray paint (Wal-Mart didn't have the Krylon Matte-Finish) and a pack of 320 grit sandpaper.

Hey All...

Jim...I am glad to hear that Diana is on the mend. I haven't had the flu in years, but I do not remember it with any fondness.

Ken...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Doing anything special?

Jeffrey...When is your surgery? Will you come home the same day or is it a 'sleepover'?

Bob...you mentioned having to paddle at huge boat and it reminded me of a vacation at Lake Powell a few years ago. I have some friends who have a houseboat at Powell and we spend a week on it now and again. We were finishing up the week and on Sunday AM were headed back to Bullfrog, where we launched. We saw a small ski boat sitting in the water near the canyon wall with folks in it waving us over. We mosied over and this Grandfather and 2 small kids were in it and been there overnight. They had run out of gas. We fed them some breakfast and gave them some fuel. They were ready to get out of the water!! I cannot remember why their family had not missed them.

BOC...I hated buying text books. It seemed the more expensive they were, the less we used them. I would try and find out if the instructor taught out of the book before I bought one. I remember spending $150 for 2 computer manuals and we barely cracked one open and the other we didn't use at all. When I grow up I wanna write text books ;) Half.com usually has a decent variety of used books as does Amazon.

Hope everyone has a great day. 'bout 86 here today. Whew! It's a hot one!! :p

Surgery is on the 8th and I'll be back home the same day. I won't be able to drive that day so one of the nurses will pick me up at my home and bring me back afterward.

Hey Ken.............

Afternoon, everyone.

I can tell it's getting closer to the real Labor Day, not the one I thought happened last weekend. :)

Bob, I forgot about your adminstrator role in the estate. You are certainly doing a good job for your old friend. Sounds like he was a real train pack rat. Not an easy decision about what to do with his layout. If there was a real club already in place, that would be one thing, but just giving things away to a bunch of people who may never do what they say (or think) is another. How long do you have until you need to make a decision? I hope those cinnamon rolls help your back.

BOC, getting the kid out of the house is kind of a bittersweet thing. The worst part is he's growing up and soon you just be one of the relatives he visits. The good thing is this is what you raised him to be come - a responsible adult.

Hi Sandy. Yes, Dianna, is now up and wants to go food shoping, which I figure is the 95% recovery point. :D I can really see this swine flu panic thing starting to ramp up again even though what she had was really less intense than a normal winter flu. As soon as people hear swine flu around here, they start the funeral preperations. That guy you rescued in the boat learned the hard way why you never go out on the water without a radio. Lake Powell has tons of Rangers that patrol the lake and he would have been towed ashore in an hour if he had a radio. Denver has had an awfully mild summer this year. When my son lived in Boulder, it was always 100+ degrees when we'd visit him in the summer.

We have some sun now after a few more showers overnight. We only got .08 inches but it keeps the plants from wilting for another day. Got the CD of my CT scan for my visit to the urologist, which I'm sure will be the high point of my week.

Erika is still barely hanging in as a tropical storm. She's been a good rainmaker for the Leeward Islands, which really needed the rain. It looks like she will continue on a slightly northwest track, passing over Puerto Rico and Hispanola. I think she will get torn up by all the high mountains on these islands and become a remnant low. She might turn a little more to the north and bring a couple of inches of rain to the Bahamas and maybe the Carolinas before dying completely. A couple of models want to bring her across the Keys and into the Gulf and redevelop her into a category two hurricane. This seems highly unlikely considering how weak she is now and the shear over the Gulf. It would be nice if she stayed a remanant low and headed up our way but I think that's about as likely as me getting nice brass engine for $10 at a yard sale. :D

Thanks everybody for the birthday wishes (good one Phillip, LOL)!

... Some people have all of the luck. ...
Bob, that may be true - except he wasn't lucky enough to live long enough to enjoy all that stuff. Hope that layout finds a worthy home.

Sandy - other than a steak dinner [and strawberry shortcake dessert], there aren't any plans for today since it's just another work day. But at least my wife will be home tonite, she's usually out doing volunteer work at the pregnancy center on Thursday evenings. So that in itself is 'special'... :)

BOC - that whole business of 'required' textbooks is like organized crime IMHO. The course instructors render used books worthless by changing the edition numbers on them every year, so students are forced to buy the full-priced newer ones. That happened with a Physics book my son 'inherited' from a friend of his who graduated this past May. He discovered he couldn't use it because it is now an old edition, so we had to cough up another $125 for an up-to-date copy!

Good Evening

We managed to get everything into Stevens new quarters. I'm surprised at how much stuff one can cram into those rooms:eek::eek: When I was in rsidence---different part of campus--residence was nick-named "The Zoo"(I wonder why:rolleyes::rolleyes:)I had to contend with a room mate that ---well:mad::mad::mad:--by Xmas I was most happy to have the room all to myself:D:D:D---He is in a room that has its own kitchenette/bathroom----:eek::D:D. As for the textbooks---we were kind of lucky---a fellow that I know through work had his son go to TO and he was telling me that his Pathology text was a "mere $1100!!!":eek::eek::eek: He was rather sarcastic about it---showed me the charge bill:eek:

And don't say anything about the extra costs either-----:eek::confused::confused::(

After all that excitement we had everyone go to a grand buffet place and basically eat to our hearts (dis)content:eek::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Catch you inna bit---

Happy burth day Ken! :D:D I would have got ya something but I for got:mad: O well if I remember may be next time:D

Knowing you.....You Spilled it on your car!:D

Jim, I don't know that Tom was a pack rat. He seemed to always have a purpose to everything he did. Me, on the other hand.. I have some N-scale, which started by winning door prizes at club meetings. And I've gained a few more that were part of some of the "lots" I have purchased. An you are correct about his layout. Angela thinks I should keep it, but I really don't have much use for most of it. His coal mine is a keeper though. Something I will ponder.

Jeffrey, be careful with some of those TV dinners. High in fat, sugars, and carbs. Makes the ol' sugar get a bit spastic at times. And what they lack in the afore mentioned, they make up by adding salt........... Do take care.

Sandy, I've towed many a boater in off the lake because they don't realize that in order to run the motor, one must have gasoline in the tank(s). And the situation compounds itself when they can't read the gauge. Ain't many fuel stops in the middle of the lake that's fer shur.

My boat holds over 270g of gas. Filling up requires a second mortgage.

Phil, was that pic the one from last years party? Ken, is sure looking pretty spry in that one.

Today, I'm taking the day off from anything I don't want to do. I really need to get some train stuff. Paint, glue, some plastic rod....... I sure miss being at the other house. The inventory there is good to go. Actually too good. I have multiples of everything. I didn't figger on being stuck in Indiana this long. Oh, well, there must be a reason, I guess.

Back isn't feeling too bad today. Must have been the cinnamon rolls. I am feeling a bit stiff though, especially my shoulders. The back always hurts, just some days are worse than others. I have a degenerative disc and bone disease at L2-L5 and C2-C7. Everything in the middle seems OK. Just my neck and lower back. I can trace both problems back to their start. My neck is from my high school and college football days. Head-on collisions with running backs that had 40# on me. And the lower back is from lifting things like engine blocks, solo, into the back of pickup trucks.Young, dumb and the feeling of invincibility............. I think it's a macho thing.

Well, the better half just went for donuts. Gotta get a fresh pot of coffee brewin'.

Bob

Oh yeah, how well I know. I made sure I got the better ones which doesn't leave a whole lot of choices but at least I won't starve. lol

Good Morning--

Everyone who came down to settle the little ones at the university are now leaving our house---Steven is all settled in and my friends kids are all settled in----and ever'body be all piculous up there--

I have to get a new way in/out of town tomorrow---all major N/S routes in the west side are clobbered with construction sites and the only E/W route appears that it too will be "worked on"--which may mean going S of here to go N..:rolleyes::rolleyes: At least the daytrip is tomorrow----

Jeff I keep on making up my TV dinners--if that is what you call these things--as I go along. Experimenting with oneself probs is the only way to go sometimes:cool::)
