Good Evening

We never even got to 60 here...it stayed at...57 .... ??

Anyhoo...got a fair bit of the yard...or field...cut....brother...what a pain in the tukous....especially around the wetland part...thank goodness it was done before nightfall...otherwise I'd still be doing it by the light of my silly little tractor thingee....

AC isn't cooling this evening. :p Both outside unit and air handler are working so I'm hoping it's just low on freon. Thankfully it didn't get too hot in Prattville today with all the cloud cover. Will give our friendly neighborhood AC repair guy a call in the a.m.

Good evening everyone,

Jeff - I'm glad to hear that your recovery from the surgery is progressing. Hang in there, we're all rooting for ya!

Garry - when you get to Birmingham, have Carey bring you to the Irondale Cafe near the NS yard [can't remember the yard name though]. Great food and great railfanning rolled into one, with a bit of interesting cinema history thrown in as well!

. . .
Geez am I exhausted! Spent a few hours decluttering the layout so that, hopefully, op sessions can resume in mid-September. So many tiny objects that may or may not be useful in the future, like fragments of sheet styrene and 6-inch strands of brass wire, with no place to store them. I could hear Murphy snickering and whispering in my ear, "Go ahead, throw that thing away - you know you'll never need it" and of course the following weekend I discover an unanticipated need for the discarded item.

At least now all my tracks are once again unobstructed, and that is a major milestone!

I'll be going to the oral surgeon tomorrow for a couple of teeth extractions. Nothing but a drop in the bucket compared to what Jeff has had done. But they'll still have me sedated pretty good, my son has to drive me there and my wife will pick me up afterward. Will probably be on a steady diet of Ibuprofen thru the end of the week.

Good afternoon all,
It's fairly warm here in Central Cal. the local weather station says it's: 92°F, sunny with clear skies dropping to 68°F tonight which is just comfotable. The Humidity is 19% and not too bad.

Say Jeffrey, I'm also glad to hear the surgery went well and your resting comfortably. With the new foot and ankle it will hopefully be easier for you to get around. A speedy recovery, I'm sure you'll spring back like new again.

Say Gary, I Gary, nice to meet you and see your picture. It's always nice to get together with fellow modelers and see what they are doing. The exchange of info really is enjoyable and many new ideas can be learned too!

Dr. John, I've been owing you a picture and description so here it is.

First off let me say, the Turn-Table top boards are actually the brownish color with a driftwood grey stain painted over it. I guess the florescent lighting changed the color as it sure isn't Green looking like this.

As you can see I added the unfinished Gallows type of support which I think adds a lot to the overall appearance. I also felt the smaller size of this TT fit my era much better and didn't take up too much room.

**Now as far as the modification I was talking about.
Notice in front of the shed that covers the motor, I cut the cover plate that came with the TT due to the fact that the de-coupling pins would hit it if a Loco extended too far forward which is poor engineering on Atlas's part.

When the cover plate is cut off it does create a slight but easily remedied problem. At the center edge of the plate, on the under side, not far in from the TT edge is a molded post which holds the positioning drive gear down which rotates the table. So to replace that I determined that a small [L] shaped bracket attached to either side of the TT housing, you can see the black thing I made up from a half round piece of rode [ )- ] with another peace of rod glued to it to from an [ L] which I fastened to the sides of the housing and prevents the gear from rising up. I glued mine but Hobby tack would work just as well and allow repositioning if needed?

I just happened to realize that the top of L brackets make a perfect shelf to attach a cover plate to to keep out too much large junk the gear area.

I should mention that with just engine a Loco of this size or smaller the cover doesn't need to be modified, but when I had a small switch engine and the coach in the back ground on the TT they just fit and there was uncoupler shank overhang.

Hi Gary, I know just where Hollister & Gilroy are at, about a 100 miles Due West of my location, a little farther by road. There area in the Coastal foothills and I'm in the Central foothills.

Speaking of Birmingham, AL. .... I've been to the Pelham model train store a couple of times. ... I recall several years ago there was a train store in the country north of Birmingam. I think it was named Trafford. .... Also, I recall a place called Spiveys that burned down I heard. ... My family members are in Vestavia south of B'ham.

Here is a scene from my railroad. A Bulington Zephyr is crossing the Mrs. Hippy River. Garry in KY.

Say Ken,

I hope you see this in time! You may be able to avoid the extractions by using Hydrogen Peroxide to gargle and brush with.
I was told a while back I needed to have several extracted and that I had bad gum disease and both cleared up for the most part.

Stay away from using tooth paste with Floride in it as it more detremental to the teeth than good as well as mouth wash with Floride. A Holistic dentist is the type you want go to, if your not? I didn't even realize there were different types of dentists!

You may experience some pain/discomfort from swishing the Hydrogen Peroxide around in your mouth at first but doe it enough so it foams up good. several times of doing this and you should notice a considerable amount of relief. It cured all my gum disease and seems to be keeping my teeth in decent shape and fairly White!

Hope this helps? Also eat only Pure butter and stay off the Margarine as that stuff is also bad for you in many ways and real Butter aids the teeth to rebuild themselves.

Good evening everyone,

I'll be going to the oral surgeon tomorrow for a couple of teeth extractions.

Jeffery- I'm so glad to hear you are responding well to the surgery.
I'm wishing you a speedy exit from the hospital.

Garry- thanks for keeping us updated on Jeffery, he is a special person.
Your relatives are fairly close to Carey.
Maybe you can wrangle an invite to see his layout sometime.
I really like that bridge in the picture. Did you kit bash it or is it scratch built?

Well, back on my head, break is over! I'll catch y'all later.

David - thanks for the photo and detail regarding your Atlas turntable. I really like the gallows you built for it - very appropriate for the era.

Almost noon here in central ohio and only 60* degrees. High should be 70*. Perfect temps to keep the furnace and AC both off. My electric bill has been killing me with the AC on all summer. Other than that most everything is wonderful. I scored another nice load of used track and turnouts. Need to get working on expanding the layout. Have a great afternoon eveyone!

Hello everybody ..... Thanks for commenting on my bridge scene. It has 2 Walthers 2-track spans and 4 Atlas single track spans to make a double track bridge 4' long. Piers and abutments are made from 14" plywood.

...........................................................................

Regarding Jeffrey, below is a direct quote of a post I just made in the MR Forum. (You may wish to peek in that forum and see all of the responses.)

"I just talked with Jeff. He sounded great! Says he will get out of hospital (Oakdale, LA) in next day or two. It was a short call because a nurse came in the room to take care of something for Jeff.

I read several of the posts to him, and he is very thankful to each of you! ..... He said : "Tell my friends in the forums I appreciate their support and I am thinking of everybody in the forums. "

Next, he will go live with his Dad for a few weeks. He has a computer there for the internet. If all goes well he can return to the forums in a few days.

I must say, I am very impressed with all of the replies in this thread. Each of you is a very good person.

Prayers continue for Jeffrey! "

Good afternoon everyone,
A special hello to Francine, how is everything here at the Dinner? Oh, Flo has the day off does she, well as long as it isn't too busy you'll have more free time then, good. How about the breakfast special, that does sound good!

It's another hot day here in Central Calif. foothills of Coarsegold. It's supposed to get up to 97°F as I remember from yesterday's report, Holy crap, it's already 104.1°F, and I thought this damn heat was supposed to let up?? Tonight it will cool down to 70°F, now that's what the day time should be, not the night temp! The humidity is 17% Guess I had take the cover off the actic vent on the garage I didn't get around to doing earlier. I'm only going to have to put it up again later on but it will help to keep the finished off garage a lot cooler though.

Say Jeffrey, Glad to hear your doing well,
Maybe you'll meet a nice understanding nurse while your there? Anyway, take care.

Hello Dr. John,
I have a good friend out my way who is also an MD and enjoys trains too. Anyway I'm glad you found the photo and descriptive info of use. The Gallows type TT structure is unfinished as it needs four more upper angle braces as well as the support cables, two per side to keep the TT flat and rigid.

In actualality the Atlas TT has a bit of a crown to it and I want to find some long small bolts, about .0060? of an appropriate length to screw down into the base to flatten it out a bit. More than likely these will be machine screw but I do have the tap to thread the hole with I just have to be careful not to go too deep through the top. I guess I need to write to Atlas and find out about electrical contact under the table first?

Garry - thanks for the update on Jeffrey! Glad he's making good progress.

Bad weather here locally with some street flooding. Not too bad where I am but parts of low lying areas in the county have flooded roads and one wash-out. No homes damaged here but a few homes were flooded in Elmore County (adjacent to us). More rain to come over the next few days as the front that brought cooler temps to those of you north and east of Alabama brings lots of rain to the south.

Hi Mike,
Yes, if it's refrigeration which I assume it is, it can get very costly. My suggestion is to set the temp a little higher than really feels as cool as you'd like it but then use fans you can move around as needed to circulate the air.

Hi Dr. John,

I hope the rain moves West all across the states as Calif. here in the Central foothills is very dry!

David, we had drought conditions for a couple of years (you may have heard about the "water wars" between Alabama and Georgia) but now we're 15" above normal with more on the way. Feast or famine, I suppose. Hope you do get some rain your way.

By the way, I'm not an MD. I have a doctorate in Theology from Samford University in Birmingham (I'm a minister). As Jerry Clower once said, "I've been educated beyond my intelligence." Folks started calling me "Doctor John" after I received my degree. Beats "Hey, you!" I suppose.

Our AC is now working again. :) It was the capacitor (third one in eight years) so it was a quick and relatively cheap fix. The downside is that we'll probably have to replace it again within two years. :p The AC repairman was a real trooper, working in a downpour. He told me that he almost was struck by lightning yesterday while working on a unit. His hair stood on end and he felt a strong tingle up his arms just as a bolt took out a tree in the next yard. That would have done it for me!

Hi all,

From Garry's posts across the street, it appears that Jeff's post-op recovery is progressing nicely.

I survived my tooth extraction procedure - as far as I can tell; I still need to wait and see if that nasty "dry socket" condition occurs. Aside from that, the painkillers are doing their job quite well!

David - I read your suggestion this morning and thanks, but my mind was pretty much already made up. These old tooth stubs annoyed me to no end and I really wanted to get rid of them. Besides, with the low-cost sedation I was able to take advantage of, I barely noticed the operation as it transpired.
