Had my cataract surgery this morning, and except for a little "scratchiness" the whole procedure when great. I'm already seeing alot better out of it, although its the distant things I'm seeing a lot better. Get to go to my Optometrist first thing in morning to get it checked out, and probably new lenses in my glasses.

Only had one instance this morning where I called a nurse's competence into question. First thing she insisted that my first name was my last name, that I was getting the Lt eye operated on, and it was to be a laser procedure and not a cataract. She was also there to start the IV in my Rt hand, so the Lt eye would be turned the correct way in the OR. I told her that she wasn't going to lay a hand on me, especially since it seems she can't even read a basic patient chart! I told her that I was a retired Registered Nurse with 28 years experience in the OR, and that I should know better than anyone what procedure and what was being operated on. I showed her my armband with my name spelled out correctly, and I even showed her the consent form, stating the Rt eye was to be operated on, with my correct signature on it. I told her not to come back into the room until she had passed the state boards, or at least even went to school.

Needless to say she was very upset, but too bad. I hate incompetence, especially in my own profession.
The whole surgical procedure took about 15 minutes and I was home before 0900.

Carey, glad your cataract surgery went well. Sorry you had a bad experience with the nurse. My wife is also an RN and she's kept quite a few nurses (and MDs) hopping when she's had surgical procedures. ;)

Carey, glad to hear your surgery went well. That nurse must have gotten her certification out of a box of Cracker Jacks!

If you've been keeping up with my computer rebuilds you know that I recently got two Mitac disk drives. One of these worked right out of the box when I got it but the other one needed work. I replaced the chassis in it with an Apple Shugart chassis. Externally the drives are identical and I want to know which drive has the Shugart mechanism at a glance. The solution was very simple. I'll give you three guesses which drive it is but you only need one.

I'll be going back to Oakdale Monday morning to have the operation done and hopefully everything will go well. I'll likely be spending a few days there afterward before being allowed to return to Leesville. Over the weekend I'll be moving some of this computer equipment to my fathers place so I can have something there to work on while I'm living there. I don't want to be bored the death after all. The only computer down there is one I built shortly after hurricane Rita flattened this part of the state in 2005. I put it there so my mother could use it in her genealogy work. I use it once in a while to get online sometimes and my father attempts to use it when he feels he needs to fry his brain. He's usually doing good to turn it on. Besides moving the computer stuff I also need to move my tools and diagnostic equipment. So I think I'm going to be a little busy this weekend. I probably need to mow the grass tomorrow too.

Well that's all for now. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening Carey. Well I see your cataract surgery went well, other than the incident with the incompetent nurse. I wonder ,what school did she get her diploma from? It sounds like she should give it back, and find another line of work. What that nurse did is just plain stupid, not to mention somewhat nerve wracking, yes? Any way,I glad things went well for you. Over all how are you doing? William.

Hey Jeff. Good luck with your surgery. I hope all goes well. Also, where did you find the neat brass loco? Nice looking locomotive. Hope you get well soon. Take care sir. William.

Incompetence and arrogance in the nursing profession is scary. You were correct in speaking out, regardless if she was offended. Glad the procedure was successful.

It's an Olympia GEM (Japan) Mogul that I got in a big box of old HO locos and rolling stock. The motor was fried and I sold it for under seventy bucks.

Hi Carey,
Glad you alert enough to catch the incompetence of the nurse or you could have been in big trouble! Of course your many years of experience in the OR sure paid off in this situation. Just imagine what may well be happening to numerous others who expect these individuals to know what they are doing, when as you proved they don't!

I had similar experiences with an intern Dr. who was taking care of my mother who had a Large Stroke prior and he had a note outside her door NPO [No Food or Liquid], but when I went to visit her, she was alert the prior day, I couldn't arrouse her no matter what I did and having taken care of her at home for some time as well as administering her insulin three to four times a day, I knew she was lacking a bit of sugar and happened to have a soft granola bar in my fatigue pants pocket and brock off a very small bit and put it between her lower lip and gum and in about a minute she began to wake up and I also gave her a sip of water and then she came too much more fully. I had Power of attorney over her medical care and knew something was wrong at the time. I went looking for this younger Dr. about 35 I think who had been tipped off I was looking for him. I was 62yrs old I think at the time, who happened to be a fair amount taller than I am and maybe a bit huskyier, and he was evidently trying to avoid me but as fate would have it I got off the elevator on the wrong floor and who should happen to stride by me at a fast pace but this Dr. clown. I somewhat cornered and read him the riot act in a very stern voice and told him never to go anywhere near my mother again.

On a couple of other occasions when Mom was in Convalescent Hospitals I had to correct CNA in the proper use of not only attaching the sling to a Hoyer Lift, the way they were going to cross attach the sling it could easily pop off, but also on the fact the legs of the lift should be spread apart for stability when lifting a patent out of bed and moving them around they were going to leave them together. Then there is another case of my being outright lied too when I definitely knew what I had whittnessed but the Administrator claimed nothing like that ever happened when they dropped poor Mom and broke her Left arm. That was reset and healing but 12 months later almost to the day they dislocated her Left Shoulder and never would reset it and she died that way about 9 months after that.

I could go on but will stop now.

You were very correct to do what you did and in actuality very probably should report that lady to the Chief of Surgery as well as the the medical board. Maybe that's what I should have done too!

Glad your eye is coming along fine.

Good After noon Guys,
It's cooler weather here in Coarsegold with a temp of about 81°F with an expected high of 86°F and a low of 61°F tonight, humidity is 29%. The Aspen fire between Mammoth Pool Resivor has burned more thn 20,150 acres approx. The terrain is too steep for fire fighters to work so they just have to let it burn it's course and fortunately most of the area is wilderness.

On the water line front I got most of it fixed, almost, I guess I didn't get a metal union seated quite right so it dripping and a couple of other drips too that need to be corrected but for the most part fixed. Oh ya, a leaky hose bib that needs a new facet washer I hope so a couple of things to do but my lower back is just getting over from yesterday. Oh well, such is life!

Hope everyone else has a good day.

Went to see the Optometrist today. She asked how the eye was doing, and I told her it was doing beautifully! I can't believe the difference. Things are somewhat brighter on that side, and at distance, 12' or more, everything is sharp and in focus! Due to rule changes of medicare, I have to see the surgeon before my next surgery. She'll find out about the nurse then from me.

I found out a few things today, that I didn't know about with the cataract surgery, although my wife swears they told me at the surgery center. (I had been given Versed, an amnesiac, so I couldn't remember garbage from yesterday hardly. Yet I was supposed to be able to remember these things 20minutes after surgery???? One, I shouldn't be lifting anything heavier than 15 lbs. Two, no bending over at the waist. Three, don't do anything that will caused my face to turn red, ie no straining. Seems they aren't using sutures any more to close the eye. They're using what's called a double eye flap. That's where they will open the cornea in one position, retracting it back over the iris, then opening the globe around the iris to remove the cataract, and insert the new lens. Then the iris flap is lain back in place, and then the cornea is laid back over that. The cornea is then held in place with a little pressure for a minute or so, until it has basically glued itself back in place. I guess that's why the scratchiness didn't last long as the cornea is a very fast healer. The only thing the Optometrist found as evidence of an incision was a minor corneal "abrasion", actually a small long dip at the top of the eye. She said that would be gone within the next 24 hours or so.

All in all I can't believe that vast improvement that has occurred in the eyesight out of that side. I was able to even start driving today, and I drove the wife and I out to lunch. Had a Whattaburger, a chain based out of Florida, that makes the other charbroiled burger stands look worse than they are.

Carey,

Glad the surgery and eye check up went well! You might even be able to see N scale the next time you come for an ops session. LOL
