gseritt... Good to see you in the Diner. Another Alabama modeler! ... As I mentioned to others here, I have family members just south of Birmingham. Our next trip to AL might be for Christmas.

Tom .... Thanks for sharing your daughter's volleyball news. Sounds like she has a lot of wisdom as she makes tough decisions.

Regarding my model railroad. I just built a prototypically correct CB&Q baggage car. Also, I am enjoying operations now that my "west end" loop is completed.

Happy Model Railroading

Garry;
If you do get down this way, let me know. I know that my friend who is the CB&Q modeler, would like to meet you.

I have relatives in AL near Pell City: My wife's sister and her family. We've normally been going down to visit during the summer every few years, and I visit with Carey and Rex [rexhea, haven't seen him around here lately]. Unfortunately now the two sisters are feuding with each other over their recently-departed mother's estate, not sure when that's gonna end - or even if it ever will!:(

. . .
A disquieting email appeared in my Inbox at work right before quitting time: A budget that was providing half of this Fiscal Year's funding for my position is being shut down. That means if my boss and his immediate superiors don't quickly find an alternative project to put me on, I could find myself unemployed at the end of March 2014 when the remaining funds have been exhausted.

Hope you day ends better than mine did...

My father is off from work tomorrow. So he'll be taking me to my prosthesis fitting in the morning. I sure hope he doesn't waste another day for me like he did today. I let him know this evening I didn't much appreciate having my day wasted doing little BS things for him that he was fully able to do for himself and had the time to do them. I had things I wanted to do too. Tomorrow will be pretty much a nothing day. We have to go to DeRidder for my prosthesis fitting then back to Leesville for his cardiologist appointment (reason he's off from work) then several other errands. By the time we get back here probably the last thing I'd want to do is be at a computer programming stuff. Maybe I'll get time over the weekend.

It's going to be another freeze tonight. A low of 30°. It's 35° now.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Good morning. It's 30° with 99% humidity. The high will be 61° (feel like 65°) with some clouds.

Been up since a little before 0600. Already ready to head out for DeRidder, just waiting on my father. He'll be going through his usual morning routine including a close shave and making sure every hair is in place. Compared to him I'm a hairy bearded beast. Gonna have to find a barber shop at some point before the Parish starts checking for dog licenses. Either that or get a collar with a license and rabies tag attached. I'm hoping the prosthesis fitting goes well and they won't have to make many adjustments.

Ken,
I hope that nothing happens with your job.

Jeff,
Hope your fitting goes well, and there aren't any major hangups with it. Ya'll be careful on the road.

Good Morning:

Yesterday's temperature range was between 39° and 21°. Overnight it dropped to 25° and is supposed to rise to 48°. Tomorrow they are calling for temps in the upper 50s.

I applied more scenery yesterday, the unpainted hard shell makes a difference. If I keep this up, I will have to get more plaster rolls. I also need to finish several industrial structures soon. It would have been easier now, if I had done things right the first time. Well live and learn.....

After a morning visit to the Mall......and lunch at some overpriced theme restaurant.........I will continue the layout project.

My youngest, is in Alaska, enroute to MCAS Pendleton. They were supposed to be diverted to the Typhoon relief effort in the Philippines, but the good old Navy, could not accommodate them - no room on the ships. So their orders were amended again. Good to have him back in the USA though.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Joe

Well the fitting went better than I thought it would. There's only a couple of minor corrections they need to make. The doc says if they any problems it'll probably be with the insurance company wanting clinical reports and other such BS from my doctors. Government health insurance agencies are always eager to save a buck wherever they can no matter who it hurts yet they're more than willing to throw billions at a health insurance program that doesn't work and never will work satisfactorily. That seems like an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Kinda like 'military intelligence'. Anyways there was just a bit of discomfort, mostly because my knee joint has a 20% deflection. That puts a lot of tension on the muscles in the back of the leg and it'll do that until they get stretched out a bit more. But despite the discomfort it felt pretty darn good to be walking around in the docs office. What a shame I couldn't bring that test leg home with me. The plastic socket on it would never stand the strain though. The permanent model will be made of carbon fiber and Kevlar. Very light but very strong.

Good deal Jeffrey, I guess well see you on "Dancing with the Stars" next??;)

Good evening. It's partly clear and 35, heading for a low of 28. I ran the Genesis GP9 with the Loksound decoder around the layout for a while this evening, switching out some cars. Since the heat doesn't get out to the train room very well, it was chilly in there, probably 50 degrees or so. When it got to the point my fingers couldn't push the buttons on the controller, I parked everything for the night. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, and I'll probably go "play trains" for a while after work.

Well at least I got to walk around a bit today. Not sure when I'll be getting my leg. They were saying something about the 19th but I doubt that's the 19th of this month. Probably the 19th of December.

I got a bit of work done on Oliver's train adventure. I programmed in the underfloor locked cargo box and most of the observation car, the location of two of about half a dozen keys that must be found to open certain things like lockers and lock boxes. One of the lock boxes contains a key, another contains a manual on how to operate a GP40 locomotive. That could come in handy if you're on a runaway train. Maybe tomorrow I can finish the observation car and start programming a coach.

My Lode Runner game disk arrived in the mail today. Now I have to get a joystick so I can play it.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Good late afternoon or is early evening?,
Good to see everyone down a Flo's today. Oh, say Francine - my favorite waitress - could I get some hot coffee and maybe a slice of Peach Pie, if you have any? You know what though, I kind of did myself in working on a water leak in a awkward position today and I'm rather hungry so to begin with how about a turkey pot pie. That sounds great! Maybe then some Peach Pie later on?

It's now 6:37Pm, lets see what WW has to say for the Coarsegold weather? It's 65.8 °F going for a low of 46 °F and the Hu-mid-ity is 43%.
To morrow is suppose to be 63 °F under partly cloudy skys.

As I was telling Francine, I finally got around to tackling the leaky incoming water line outside the back door of my home. At times it seemed to seal itself off but then it would start to leak again. I figured it had to do with the clamps around the Black Vinal pipe and the inverted 'T' fitting and sure enough that's where the minor leak but bad enough leak was at at. I just couldn't remember how far down I burried it. Fortunately it was only about 12" down but about 10" from the cement walk leading to the back door. Of course there is other exposed plumbing there for a cold water faucet so it was a bit cramped as well as the fact the well I had dug before to work on other plumbing issue was half full of water.

So after shutting the Water Well Pump off and relieving the water pressure in the line and kneeling down I managed to get most of the standing water bailed out enough to see the the top two clamps on the verticle incoming line from the Well. The nut on top Stainless clamp was just fine and I could snug-it up real easy, the nut on the clamp about 3" below it was badly rusted in place it seemed, evidently not stainless steel, so I didn't try and mess with it. On the lower line connections of the inverted 'T' I was able to take up on both clamps fairly easily and was hoping that would solve my problem as it looks like quite a job to cut the clamp bands even with a dremel and cut off wheels due to it's position and then it seems there was a 5th inline clamp as my Dad and I extended the line down back many years back. So that made two clamps I couldn't tighten up and couldn't see an easy way to remove them to put on new clamps as I have two ready and waiting.

So I was hoping that what I did by tightening up the three other clamps might solve the leak problem and headed down to the Water Well to restart it and came back up and kept a watch on the water level in the hole and unfortunately it seemed like it was still leaking! Oh, great what now. Sometimes it pays to just review my thinking and the answer came to me. I don't have to remove the old clamps, just put a new clamp along side of it and snug it down which should solve the problem/s. Look for the easy way of doing things!!

On the the C & S West RR, last night I worked a bit more figuring how I was gong to handle the the Whiskey Switch passing siding and mainline where they are going to again tie into the single track coming off a right curve and after playing with several Fast Track templates** I printed up and covered with clear packaging tape I found I just couldn't get two Left hand number 5 straight switches to fit as I previously planned so I had to once again use two Left hand, 30*/21* curved turnouts to fit in and it looks like they should work fine to extend the line over to the mine siding and continue the main line around Amalgamate Hill and over the second mine on it's far side and then above and behind the town of Five Oaks.

The Central Valley Branch line tie strips I'm using seem to be very nice to work with as I can use a few spikes on either side of various eared ties to hold them in place and move them fairly easily and re-spike them as needed to get them laided as desired and then spike the rail down in pregauged tie plates which are very precisely molded on each tie. I do use my three point gauges but I'm not sure it's really necessary.

**I need to print a retraction to what I said once before about the Fast Tracks Templates being too small. I found I had a setting on my printer set to print at a reduced size and hence the reduction in track width! So it was my error, not Fast Tracks as the new templates printed up just fine and the rail spacing is very precise. I just made sure there was no correction to the size the templates were printed at. **

Say Francine, I guess I'm going to pass of the Peach Pie tonight but maybe tomorrow if I make it in?

Oh, Say Jeffrey. Glad to hear things are progressing so smoothly for you. I'm sure it felt great to be able to walk around the Dr's. office on your two legs again. Keep up the good work, I'm sure you'll be glad to get back to your layout once again.

Take care Budd

The first time I can recall playing it was back in the mid 80's on one of the first Mac's. The one with the little bitty screen.

Yeah, about 82 or 83 for me, about the time I got hitched the 1st time. Her grandfather had it then on the Atari or his Vic 20, I dont really remember which, just we used to play it and Donkey Kong every time we would visit.

Seems like another lifetime ago!

I probably won't get anything done today. Lots of muscle pain from the walking around at the docs office yesterday. I took some oxycodone earlier. It's not agreeing with me. I'll probably just go back to bed for a while.

A Vic 20? Been a long time since I've seen one of those in working condition. They weren't the greatest to start with. My first system was an Osborne 1. It was good for what it did but wasn't very good for technical work. One day I used a friends computer and was quite impressed with it. It was an Apple II+ clone, a Franklin 1000 if I remember correctly. I looked for one at Delta Computers in Alexandria but they didn't have one. The salesman suggested the Apple IIe which at that time hadn't yet been introduced to the public. I tried out one they had in their store and was quite favorably impressed with it. They bought my Osborne from me and I bought two of the IIe's, both 'Diana' models with Mos Tech 6502 processors, one was a straight 64k RAM model with no options other than DOS 3.3 and ProDOS. The other was a special order with 128k RAM, DOS 3.3, ProDOS, Z80 CP/M co-processor and several other options and a technician package. I still have both of those computers. The 64k model has been upgraded to 128k and a Z80A CP/M co-processor . The one that was originally 128k has the CMOS 65C02 enhancement package and has been rebuilt as close as possible to a 'Super II'. That's the system I'm writing my game on. Last year I picked up a third IIe that was in bad shape (paid $20 for it so that should tell you something). It was a school computer. I rebuilt it and it's top-notch now. It's 128k RAM, standard non-enhanced LCA chassis, DOS 3.3, ProDOS, 6502 processor.
