Howdy ALL! Jeffrey some people will do anything to get a lunch break . Lol , Should have killed the possum and made a stew. Steve I'll take two of those tankers !!!!! Have a nice evening all !!

Evening, everyone...or I guess a very early good morning, depending on where you're at.

Had a nasty Meniere's attack today. Started spinning about 3:00 pm and got enough valium in me fast enough that only had spinning vertigo for about an hour. Luckily, I only got to the nausea stage and not the "fun" stuff that comes afterwards. Laid down for abut two hours and slept and feel reasonably good now except for that truck that hit me. It's a chronic inner ear disease with no known cause and no cure. I'm already mostly deaf in one ear from it but no signs of it progressing to the other ear so it's all good. It's a yucky disease but a lot better than the things I could get at my age.

Ken, do like Rex said and call Tony's Train Exchange. They will make up the ribbon cable in the exact length you need with the connectors. They do first class work and I'll bet it will actually cost you less money when you factor in the cost of the crimping tool.

Jeffrey, it sounds like a pretty shrub but I think I'll stay away from anything that gets that big. I do remember seeing that huge rose bush in Tombstone although I didn't know it was a Lady Banks. The sign said it weighed about 11 tons!

Great job trapping that possum. They aren't easy to get. I had a whole family under my deck in California and they were the source of never ending problems. When they are making babies, they make a racket that could wake the dead. :) I finally got them all trapped after about three years work although the patriarch of the family was so huge I couldn't get him in a 50 gallon trash can with a snare. He succumbed to lead poisoning.

Paul, I had no idea any cactus could winter over in upstate New York. It sure looks like it likes the climate by the beauty of those flowers.

Steve, I have babes like that show up wanting to look at my trains all the time (Don't I wish!). You Brits just don't cultivate the right kind of female railfans. :D

Rex, your dentist is right that you get the best fit by wearing the dentures and letting your gums heal to the contour of the dentures. I've had mine for about 8 years now and they still fit like a glove. OTOH, after going through as much pain as I did, I'm not sure I wouldn't take the chance of a less than perfect fit and have them adjusted later. Like I said, it may not be as bad with fewer teeth but make sure your dentist gives a prescription for some heavy duty pain pills like dilaudid, not something wimpy like Vicodin.

Blazing hot again here with a high of 100 and low of only 74. It's still 80 right now so I guess it will get even worse tomorrow although we have a slight chance for some storms down here. Bertha is backup to a cat 2 and looks like she will regain cat 3 status tomorrow before starting her slow decline toward death as she moves further north. Bermuda is not out of the woods yet but it's looking less likely that Bertha will get close enough to cause anything significant. Believe it or not, Bertha is following a branch of the Gulf stream that is unusually displaced about 1,000 miles out in the Atlantic and Bertha may end up holding together as a tropical storm long enough to hit Iceland.

Good morning.

It's 74 and partly cloudy. The high today will be in the lower 90's and there's a fair chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.

As exciting as yesterdays possum chase was I could have easily done without it. I'm not used to moving that quickly, therefore my back feels as though it's going to snap in two at any instant this morning. I think I'll just take it easy today.

Good morning folks

It was 77 F on the way in this morning. The humidity was down from the previous days. Our high today is supposed to be 88 F. We had a tremendous thunderstorm roll through last evening. It had a lot of lightening and an amazing downpour. It was raining so hard we could barely see across our street and it rained like that for about an hour. Our street turned into a river and the intersection a few houses away was impassable at one point.

I almost finished the Mather stockcar. I began weathering wheels for two Intermountain steel reefers, two Atlas wood reefers, two Walthers USRA gondolas, and two P1K composite gondolas. I also cleaned off some of the accumulated junk from the layout. It was the best night of modeling in months!

Jim, I hope you are feeling better. One of the guys who used to work for me had that same problem. He had an episode at work once. After we got him comfortable I had to drive him home for the day. He missed about a week afterwards because he kept having recurrences.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Good morning clubbers!

Rex - You almost got it right about the cables, except I ordered from Litchfield instead of Tonys. Their prices were so low that, even after I paid extra for 2nd-day air delivery, the total $ was nearly the same as I originally would've paid for the cables at Radio Shack! I should have them by Friday afternoon.

Jeffrey - sounds like that old possum gave ya quite a whoopin' before you captured him, LOL! We were being regularly visited by one of those critters on our back deck, it would come up and eat the food from our cat's dish. Opening the sliding glass door didn't faze him, he just glanced up as if to say, "Hey - you talkin' to ME??" Only my hollering and running towards him made him waddle away reluctantly. Haven't seen him for over a year, wonder if he's still alive?

Steve - if my wife saw those kind of people at train shows/layout tours, her whole attitude about my mrr hobby would sour, LOL

Jim - I'm not sure what it is you've got, but I sure hope I never get it! I think migraines will be the millstone around my neck when I get older, runs in my family...

Good Morning ALL ! It's gonna be 77 today and no humidity ! What a day. Gonna take a walk down to the Farmer's Market after I get off the computer and see what I can find. Jim hope all is well . I had vertigo once and I could not get on a latter for a while . Thanfully it cleared up and have not had it in 30 years.Jeffrey looks like you had enough excitement for awhile. Chris hope all goes well with the job. Rex I'm going back to the dentist on July 25 to discuss my teeth . Not looking forward to that visit . Well off to the market to find some bargains . Hope you all have a real nice day !!!!!

Hey it's almost weekend,,,

Jim hope your feeling better sir,
Rex a picture says a thousand words,,, so they say, got my attention anyway.
Ken all in the name of fun :) breaks the day up,,, maybe the wife would join in a bit more ;)

Jeffery Those things make a very evil sounding growl don't they

Rex;

Too bad about the teeth. I know they've been giving you problems for a long time.

I hope the immediate fitting goes well. Mine didn't. I developed a massive blood clot and abscess where the surgeon had removed a molar. I couldn't wear mine for a month!

Even after two re-linings, if I don't use adhesive, (yuck) they don't stay in place very well.

Wonder if Super Glue would work?:confused::confused::confused:;)

Hello all!
That's a bummer, Jim! Sure hope you get over it soon. BTW: I'm not much on pain pills, but you can bet that I will ask for the strongest this time. I don't care if I go into the "whoopee, dont' give a d---!" mode for awhile ;) :D . I don't know exactly when the pulling part will take place; it probably will be soon after the partial comes in. First, I have to do the impression thing. It would be my luck for all of this to take place about the time Ken journeys down our direction, but I'm hoping it will be done before this.

Ken: Good move with cable! You got to get the wheels rolling;). Needless to say, if Steve's groupies were in MR none of us would be allowed to travel to train shows or layout visits (dang it!).

Jeffrey: Years ago, we lived in the country complete with chickens. One night we heard a racket at the chicken house and saw a possum trying to get in. I told the wife that she needed to learn to take care of the situation, so I got her one of my shotguns. When the possum saw us it starting moving away and I yelled to my wife, Shoot! Shoot! She did ........Killed our outside PVC water faucet dead! The possum continued his retreat into the woods.:D :D

Paul: I know the dread well. I just found out that my MIL used the same day method for her dentures and all went well. It ain't going to be pleasant no matter which way:eek: .

Chris: Hope the take over doesn't take place in your county. Maybe the new company would pick you up for employment, if it did. I know the bennys wouldn't be the same, but it would be a job. Are you already vested in the retirement system?

CJ: Yikes! Maybe that only having 4 to remove it won't be so (as) bad. I asked the dentist why he couldn't just super glue the four to the other teeth.....he didn't see the humor in the question.

Afternoon, everyone.

Thanks, guys, feeling much better today. Meniere's is a strange disease because it's so variable in different people. I'm lucky, in a way, that my bad ear starts to feel a lot of pressure a few hours before an attack so I can take some valium, which acts as a vestibular sedative. That usually stops the attack from getting worse as long as I can lay down in a dark room for few hours. Some people have no warning and just end up on the floor with profound vertigo and vomiting. They can't drive and some are really totally disabled. Given the alternatives, my case isn't bad. I usually only get three or four attacks a years and only one or two are really bad. Being deaf in one ear sometimes has its advantages. I can just pretend I don't hear what my wife is saying if I don't want to respond. :)

Rex, I'm not much for narcotics either but you'll want to be in happy land for a while after you get the dentures. CJ, it sounds like you really had it bad. I healed up fine, it was just the initial pain that was bad. My dentures still stay in place fine without adhesive. I was really lucky to have a good dentist who knew what he was doing. He's in California and I hope I can find one as good here if I have problems. As far as using super glue, there are dentists who are starting to do implants using medical grade super glue as part of the adhesive mix so your idea isn't so far-fetched.

Chris, outsourcing seems to be the way of the world now. Even if your county does outsource the maintenance, you will still probably be offered a job. It will probably be a pay cut but at least you'll be dealing with a private employer instead of the county bureaucracy. I don't know how you guys are above normal in rainfall - our drought just keeps getting worse. :(

Tom, sounds like quite a storm up there. I'd give up a small body part for an hour's worth of rain. :)

Ken, I sure hope you don't end with migraines. They aren't a lot of fun either. There are some new medications on the market now so at least there's some hope. Glad to hear you already ordered the cable. I've found that places like Litchfields or Tony's can almost always do things like that for no more, and many times less, than what it would cost for me to do it...and it actually works when it gets here. :D

Paul, it sure sounds like a nice, comfortable summer day up there. Just a touch hot here - 100 degrees as I write this with a heat index of 104. Most people who get vertigo have a bout of labyrinthitis. It's an infection of the inner ear that usually clears up in a week or so. That's what I thought I had when I first had a Meniere's attack but it didn't stop after the usual period of time. My ENT was a real Meniere's specialist and knew what I had almost right off the bat. Thank God for valium or I'd be a basket case.

Rex, your story about the possum reminds me of when I was teaching my wife to shoot my shotgun. It's a Remington 870 with an 18" barrel and I always have it loaded with double ought buck. I should have used bird shot when she was first learning but I forgot (oops!). We were out in back of her old house in the country and the first shot left a giant bruise in her shoulder and she managed to put a big hole in her barn door instead of the target, which was thirty feet the other side. She actually got pretty good with it once she got used to the kick and I wouldn't like to be the thug coming into the house with her having that shotgun.

As I said, it's another hot day down here. We've got a few clouds around but it looks like all the action is up by Birmingham over to Atlanta so not much hope for us in the parched central part of the state. Bertha is wobbling around in the North Atlantic and will gain a little strength again before she starts to die. Nothing else that looks interesting in the tropics now. The low last night was only 76 so it looks like we are just going to get hotter until something breaks.

evening guys

Rex yes, i'm vested 11 years, but even if i manage to hold on and put in 30 years my retirement wouldn't be enough to live on it:( and SSI won't be there more than likely when i retire either? Afternoon Greetings ! To ALL ! Back from the market with all kind of veggies and some cheese also . Jim glad to hear that your feeling better. Looks like the possum is still going strong . One night when the wife and I where coming home late , there was a Mama possum crossing our street with all the babie hanging on to her. She made it across the street without getting hit and none to soon,a car went zooming by just as she made it to the curb !! Rex you giving me second thoughts about gettine my teeth pulled and getting my partial. Jim a couple more final shote of my cactus for the year . Enyoy :D :D

Evening All!

I keep seeing that most of you are experiencing 100+ degree temps and am not envying you AT ALL! I do not believe that we have broken 100 yet this summer and I, for one, would like to keep it that way! Today was 98 and it seemed pretty darn warm. I am heading for Colorado Springs this weekend for an early and shared bday celebration with friends and I love the drive there. I have to, rather I GET to drive by the Air Force Academy and it is such a beautiful sight. It is nestled in the mountain range that includes Pike's Peak and the view is simply breathtaking.

Jim, I am glad that your bout with Meniere's did not lay you low for too long. Does it usually have a sudden onset or is there an aura that proceeds it?

Chris, I was doing contract work with my old company and the project ended, as I knew it would. I am sort of job hunting and my brother put me in touch with a corporate consultant today who gave me some tips on finding the job I would LOVE to have. One that I would be excited to go to every day. One tip was to list the top 15 companies for which I would like to work. He said that we would narrow it down to 5 companies and 3 would make a viable offer. I will let you know how it goes and how the process works. As I was researching companies today, I googled...Google. Sheesh! Do they have some incredible benefits or what!? They have, at their corp. HQ in CA, 11 gourmet dining rooms for their employees. They have laundry facilities in case you cannot keep up with your washing at home. They will give you $5000 towards the purchase of a hybrid car, and they have free snacks for all their employees!!! Free snacks!! Wohoo!! Free M&Ms!~ I do believe I have found the #1 company for my list!!

Rex, Although I do not envy you the dental work...I am sure you will be pleased with the end result! :D

Paul, those cactus...or is that cacti ??? are beautiful. How long do they bloom?

Jeffrey, I think 'possums have the most precious faces! Of course, I would imagine that they are more precious when they are on the outside and you are in the house! I rescue hedgehogs and they have sweet, sweet faces not unlike 'possum's. Here in Colorado, opposums are sold as pets. We have prairie dogs by the gozillions and I think they are adorable, too. :)

Have a fabulous evening!

Morning All. Just thought I'd pop in and say howdy. Haven't been too. busy, just tryin to get a few projects off the shop floor. To date I have finished construction on a Central of Georgia pulpwood flat, needs decaling, finished building a southern lowside gondola, all it needs is paint and decals, painted my L&N little woody caboose, mostly finish paint and decals on it,and I have started back on two Southern Silverside Gons, that I had lying around. Outside of all that, been doing pretty good. Jeff,Happy Belated B'day sir,may you be blessed with many more. Anyway,Gotta run, take care guys. Talk to y'all later. William.

Good morning folks

It was 74 F on the way in to the office. It feels like the humidity is creeping back in. High today will be 89 F with sun.

My daughter had a basketball game last night. Her team won 34 to 17. She didn’t have any points but had plenty of rebounds, some assists, and a few key steals. The gym was had no air-conditioning or fans. There was only one set of doors that could be opened at one end. As result it was stifling in there. My daughter’s team was playing shorthanded which meant every girl had a lot of floor time. Given the conditions in the gym I was amazed no one passed out.

I finished weathering and sealing the wheels. I began weathering the trucks on the reefers and gondolas.

This weekend has the grocery store trip and the pet food store trip. My wife is working all day Saturday and the kids will be going to a birthday party Saturday afternoon. I have not be told what Sunday holds for us.

I would like to finish weathering the reefers and gondolas.

I hope everybody has a good day.
