Jeffery i think way to many people today take all nice stuff for granted, they don't understand what people have given in the past, a friend of mine was a POW and was forced to work in Poland in the consentration camp's, recently he went on a tour of local secondary school's to explane the horror's of war, and what was sacraficed to build a better future for generations to come, sadley though dementure has started to affect him so he can't go on.
That is sad. We need more like him to convey the message to today's youth. I know of one of the camps you speak of, at Yanov. The only way in or out is by rail, over the bridge called 'The Cassandra Crossing'.

Holiday Weekend Outlook: Warm and Stormy
May 27, 2007

The Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of the 2007 summer season, will be full of warm and calm weather along both coasts, even as the central U.S. stays a bit stormy.

Today:

The second day of the holiday weekend will be very similar to Saturday, in that additional storms are likely for the Central Plains and Great Lakes and warmer, more tranquil conditions will persist across the West and South.

The only large variation will be found in the Northeast and parts of the Ohio Valley, where early-morning sunshine will give way to increasing clouds and a chance of late-day showers and thunderstorms. A few rumbles of thunder will be possible over the Northern Rockies as well.

The Central Plains will remain soggy, with another round of thunderstorms likely. Across Texas, the additional rain could lead to isolated episodes of flash flooding.

The hottest temperatures will be found across the Desert Southwest, where highs will easily climb into the triple digits. Temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s will be found across the rest of the Southwest, Great Basin and inland California. Similar temperatures will also be found in parts of the interior South and along the Gulf Coast.

Highs across the rest of the West, Central Plains and Northeast will generally be in the 70s and 80s, with a few 60s found in the western Great Lakes.

Memorial Day:

The extended holiday weekend will end the same way it began, with a scattering of thunderstorms across the Central U.S. and very warm weather across the West and Southeast.

The scattered afternoon thunderstorms will mostly be found across much of the Southern Plains and Ozarks. Additional storms will make their way into the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast later in the day.

The West will continue to warm up, as 90-degree temperatures will expand into more of the Great Basin, southern Rockies and west Texas. While the Desert Southwest will continue to see highs in the triple digits, the Pacific Northwest will only make it into the 70s and lower 80s.

Shifting focus to the East and South, temperatures will also be on the warm side as the thermometers should climb well into the 80s, with a few 90-degree readings possible.

Mornin' Bill!

Mornin' Fergie! I bet your garden looks great as always. BTW, my neighbor across the street and I were chatting the other day. He works for Geneva Schools as a maintenance and grounds keeper. He I offered him some oregano from my herb garden and he gave me a couple flats of lettuce he had started. Found out that he owned a Landscaping business before he went to work for the schools. I guess that explains his mowing the lawn twice a day........ ;) :D

The US once had a section that wanted to seperate itself from the rest of the nation, and did. It was the CSA, the Confederate States of America. The United States government wasn't going to stand for this, and rightly so. After much political debate and bickering the southern states let their cannon do their talking for them, at Ft. Sumpter. After nearly 5 years of unrelenting war, the south was defeated, but at a terrible price. Was it worth it? Yes. Had the union remained divided, the US would not be the nation it is today. Ancestors of mine, both European immigrants and Native Americans alike, fought on both sides. Many were killed. They died fighting for what they believed in. Some fought for the Union, some for the Confederacy. Today, it doesn't matter what side they were on, except to the historians. They are all veterans, Union and Confederate alike, they are remembered as American veterans, and that is how I will remember them on Memorial Day. As American veterans who died for their country, to defend the rights and beliefs that were important to them, to defend their homeland, their freedom and their way of life. As you look around at all that you have, at your family, your home, I ask you, what is more important than that?

Mornin' Jeffrey! Amen to that! That is one of the best paragraphs on what Memorial Day is supposed to be about. (unfortunately it seems at times to have become a platform for politicians to pat themselves on the back for .... I won't go any further.) I live about 10 miles away from the "official" birthplace of Memorial Day, Waterloo, NY. Needless to say Memorial Day is a valued and important observance around here.

May all of you in the USA have a reflective and joyful Memorial Day remembering those who lost their lives because of War. May we remember the sacrifices they made and may God have mercy on us!

Ya it was a gorgeous day here as well but... I spent the better part of the day in the hospital because dear old dad won't listen to direction! Bent over to pick up a kleenex and kept on going (Tim Conway from Carol Burnett couldn't have done it better) To make matters worse he passed out several minutes later so we called 911. That was at 11 30am and he got released at 830pm. Where does the time go:(
So today i have to hussle and make up for lost time Oh joy.

Anyway time to run

Fergie

Been busy for a few days and haven't gotten much posting done. Lot's happened around here since then. I read back a couple days seems I've missed a lot.

Ken: Congrats to your daughter (and her father). My first daughter was shipped to me from her mom because she got involved in gang-bangers. Her boy friend was actually on Cops. After a rough couple years for her out of her element, she decided she had to go back. She lasted about a month with her mom and ran away. She met up with a sailor and got married the day before he shipped out. She never saw him again. The wedding was annulled long distance.

However, this story has a happy ending. One of the sailors in the wedding party helped her through her rough time and eventually they got married. My daughter is now married to career sailor and I have two really cute granddaughters. My daughter got her GED while stationed in Italy and now she is working on her BA via correspondence from Italy.

Photo taken before they shipped out three years ago.

Good morning.

Today's Weather for:
Sundown, LA 71446-6114 5/28/2007

Sundown Fire Dept., Station 23

Heat Index: 81°F
Humidity: 76%
Dew Point: 69°F

So Far Today
High: 77°F
Low: 66°F
Rain: 0.00"
Rain Rate: 0.00"/h
Gust: 8mph ESE

Rest Of Today High: 85 Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 80s. Southeast winds around 10 mph.

Tonight Low: 65 Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the mid 60s. Light and variable winds.

As the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend comes to a close, many Americans will begin their journey back home, either by way of interstate or airport. Regardless of the mode of transportation, weather could cause a few problems for travelers over the next couple days. Here is a daily breakdown of possible travel trouble spots:

Today:

A scattering of showers and thunderstorms will again develop across the Southern Plains and Midwest. As a result, airport travel in and out of Dallas, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis and Indianapolis could be affected. Additionally, traffic along portions of I-35, I-44 and I-70 might be slowed by the hit-and-miss precipitation.

Farther to the north, a more organized storm system will bring a greater chance of severe storms to Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas. Travelers planning on taking either I-90 or I-94 through any of the aforementioned states should expect a few slow-downs if a storm moves across the interstate.

Stretching from Florida to North Carolina, tranquil weather conditions will pave the way for a great travel day for airports in Miami, Atlanta, Nashville and Charlotte. Travel along the southern half of the I-95 corridor should be free-flowing as well.

Farther north, spotty showers and blustery winds should make for tricky travel from the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast. While the precipitation will take aim on Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia, wind gusts in excess of 30 mph will be possible in upstate New York and New England.

The entire Western U.S. has a great day of travel shaping up as high pressure will keep the hazardous weather away. The lack of weather-related tie-ups should keep traffic on I-5 moving just fine and flights in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Phoenix on time.

Being as it's getting near lunchtime, I'll have something appropriate.

Ahhh, BB-64, the USS Wisconsin:2 (2nd USS Wisconsin).

Here's the Missouri doing the same, look at the white foam on the bow, she really moves! More from the Navy, on the Missouri:

USS Wisconsin has her own site:

Little history on the USS Missouri, and where she's stationed now (I say stationed, they claim decommissioned, but they left her in a condition to be re-commissioned if ever need be).

Fergie Sometimes our parents remind of oor ourselves when we young and full of p+*s and vinegar. We heard our parents voices but never really heard or listened to them. My dad told me this a few years ago but does not agree with it now. He is 88 and he and mom are in the same room at the health center/convalescent Center/nursing home. They are doing really well, I need to get them out of there now and then. My brother does take them out to lunch about once a month but he has more free time than I do. Glendia and I do get out to see them quite often but that is still not often enough. But daily would not be often enough.

Hi gang,

A blessed Memorial Day to you all! Spent most of today with the family, visiting battle sites around Gettysburg.

Fergie sorry to hear about your Dad, hope he recovers quickly.

Jeff, that's a great tribute to the Civil War dead, there were heroes on both sides. I only wish certain groups would quit trying to eradicate their statues from public squares...!

RT, good to see ya, don't be a such a stranger. I remember the USS Wisconsin pic from your signature in earlier days. Josh that's a fine image of the Missouri to complement RT's photo.

Rex - a hearty congrats to your grandson, too! This seems to be The weekend for graduations and the associated parties. Sarah spent the first half of Sunday dropping in at all the various parties being held for various classmates, then I spent the 2nd half driving her to New Jersey to visit friends up there (she doesn't have her own car yet). Obviously not much MRR or forum time for me LOL!

Chip, thanx for the indirect pat-on-the-back regarding Sarah's graduation. She was [and still is] a real firebrand, got herself lots of detentions over the years. They were as punishing to her mother and me as they were to her, since we had to disrupt our regular busy schedules to pick her up after school. Anyhow, what an excellent family portrait you shared! I can never get my kids to sit still long enough to be photographed, and Sarah refused to pose for any because her eyes were all red-rimmed from the emotional goodbyes.

Evening Gang: When I checked the rain gauge this afternoon it read 3.5 inches. That's since saturday.
Fergie: I hope that your dad is doing better. It's a good thing that you were home and not at sea.
Ken: That is one fine looking young lady. Did you buy yourself a new shot gun for her graduation? Be sure to keep her away from Army helicopter pilots. Just ask my wife. She married one.
Time to hit the sack.
Good Night All

Morning all
Chip thats a great picture
Guns and smoke thats got the day of to a great start,
Fergie Hope your dad gets better soon, he sounds just like the wife's nan, she's home after a major stroke but she only a shadow of her former self,,,but she still insists on doing the same old things, hence the two black eyes from trying to reach something out of reach, the chair arm won the day.

steam trip
Don's videos of the trip turn up the volume

Anyway yesterdays steam trip, what a b----dy performance, we missed the outbound leg, in short we had two commuter trains in the same platform and we got on the wrong one, i noticed at the same time as it set off but that was to late so 40 min's later we got back to Preston and had to catch another train to intercept the steam special at the destination for the return leg,,, so after a short 150 mile detour we made it and had a great return journey, two other couples also made the same mistake as us which made me feel slightly better. I didn't get any pictures on the outbound trip but got some on the return and from Ravenglass, the destination.
The boys in the signal box, nothing is connected thankfully
