I find it funny that to him, if it's not operations, then what's the point? I am the complete opposite. If it doesn't look like the real world, then what's the point? I just thought I would share this interesting observation of the differences in opinion.

This, Corey, seems to be the difference between the two "main camps" of model railroading. This very subject sparked a multiple page discussion across the street about a year and a half to two years ago. I was a lot like your uncle. If it's not operations what's the point? I still prefer operations, but I've also been at it long enough to know, it doesn't matter!

Coffee please, Flo!

Spent the last several days in Little Rock, Ar. visiting with daughter. Boy it got cold over there. Wanted to go to One Track Mind, the hobby shop over there, but he was closed the only day, (Mon) I could go.:( But still had a real good visit with my daughter. Saw her best friends new baby, and he's gonna be a pistol!

Left about 3pm yesterday and got to Memphis right at rush hour. Musta hit a lull, as it only took us the normal 15mins to navigate the interchanges and get out of there. As we left Memphis, it started getting dark, and then it started snowing. There were times I thought we were in a blizzard, as the crosswinds were howling and the snow was heavy, but then we'd bust out of the "shower" and we'd be in a section of light snow. Temperature stayed right at 36`, so we weren't worried about ice forming on the roads. It snowed like this all the way across Ms. and Al. until we got home in Hoover at 10pm. How much longer it snowed afterwards, I don't know. There still is snow flurries in our forcast, but there ain't enough clouds for even that now, just cold and windy!

Morning all, just thought I'd check in before attacking my new baby on the kitchen table. Spooky's all perched and ready to help Dad with his project, she's wondering exactly WHAT piece of the project she should run away with and hide. Hope it's not the centipede tender, LOL!

Philip--good luck to your son tonight, and prayers for your wife's impending surgery. Hope all goes well for both of them.

Ray: One nice thing about teaching AFTER retirement is that Jesuit High School gave me a pretty flexible schedule. Actually, my contract with them is more of a Coach's contract than a binding Faculty contract. These Jesuits are pretty nice people to work for. And the pay ain't to shabby, either, by golly!

CSX--are they rumbling over 'there' again? Stopped in to answer a question a guy had about a train movie, but guess I missed the 'big show'. Amazing how some people fling that particular epithet around, isn't it? Of course it has a new meaning on High School campuses, these days--it's a synonym for "Lame". Took me a while to get used to it.

Well, Spooky just hopped up on the computer desk with her "Get offa that, Dad, otherwise I will hit DELETE with my paw", so I guess it's time to go hit my new Yellowstone and see what I can accomplish under her supervision.

Flo--sorry about ordering the Mocha instead, today, but you still make the best in town, darlin'!

Tom

Carey,

I think I could end up liking operations. This is the reason I'm trying to spend a little time planning my next layout. I think I consider myself more of a modeler than a model railroader right now. To tell you the truth, this is a major hang up for my design process. I'm trying to achieve a balance between city scape and railroad operations. My only problem is not knowing what is desirable for operations. I'm sure I'll figure it out.

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?

HE WON!!!!!

My sons car won the pinewood derby race and took second in the design contest!

He's pretty happy! He got a small participants trophy, a large 2nd place trophy, and a great big 1st place trophy and a blue ribbon!

Plhil--

A big, resounding YES!!!! from this end of the counter. Congratulations to him (and you!). Nothing like the wonderful 'rush' of being a proud Dad, right?

I'm really happy for both of you.

Tom

Hey Philip! That is great! Give him a cub hand shake and a pat on the back from this old Boy Scout. Was this a pack, district, or council event? Will he be competing again at a higher level....? Inquiring minds want to know. Pinewood Derby was always one of my son's favorite Cub Scout things. Brings back a lot of great memories...

I did the scouting thing when I was younger, but this was actually an Awana thing (Church youth group event).

How about a couple of pics from the races tonight?

Here's the cars heading to the finish line in the finals.......and look who's out front!

And he's reading all of your posts.....and he says thanks!

Good morning folks

It was 18 F as I rolled out of the driveway. The wind chill, however, had temperatures feeling like 4 F. High today is supposed to be 31 F.

I am having a bit of a rough morning. The foot is really bothering me this morning. The pain is about 7 or 8. It took me a while to get going this morning because walking was so difficult. I think standing on so much last night during the pack Meeting had something to do with it. This is the worst flare up in about a year. I am waiting for the pain medication to take the edge off.

No modeling last night since we had Cub Scout Pack Meeting.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Morning all!

Phillip - Max congrats to your son! What's he gonna do next? :D

Tom P - hope your foot gets better.

Finally got my Honda back yesterday. They did an excellent job on it, I've got to admit I don't remember ever seeing it this shiny and new-looking before! As for modeling, I've started on another covered hopper weathering project: I'm taking an old Front Range 2-bay ACF and painting it in rusted-out Chessie colors. Have to wait a week or two for my LHS to order the decals though.

Good morning.

It's currently 36 degrees here under clear skies. Expecting a high of 69 under partly cloudy skies this afternoon.

I have to go see the eye doctor today so he can see if I have any damage to the blood vessels in my eyes due to my diabetes. That's gonna be a drag.

Mornin' everyone!

Philip I now remember you mentioning that earlier. Great work and a lot of fun where ever it is done. Bet your son is still excited!

Tom Ouch! Hope it is feeling better by now.

Paul the after bloodwork coffee and donuts are on me this morning. Got two months before my next one. It's only going up to 16°F here in the Finger Lakes. How do you rate 19°? At least the sun is shining.

Got an e-mail from a fellow local modeler (G-Scale) yesterday. He is bringing some friends of his over to see (and run, hopefully) the Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western RR on Saturday. Man do I have some cleaning up to do before then. The folks coming over do both model railroading and RC Planes. I am also right in the middle of doing my income taxes and have several meetings before Saturday. I think I best get to work.......

Morning, everyone.

Well, out here in SunnyCal, the weather calls for a high of about 70 here in the Sacramento area. I could SWEAR someone told me that we're still supposed to be in Winter out here. Just as long as it stays cold in the Sierra and doesn't melt the snowpack. But at least we have March coming in, and it's always a wet month around here--third wettest of the season. We need the water during the summer to keep our swimming pools filled, LOL!

Jeffrey--hope the eye exam turns out OK for you--liked those thumbnails BTW, I commented on them over on the photo section, but I'll say it again--GREAT work!

TomP--you've got my sympathy on your foot. I've got a big-toe bunion that occasionally flares up and believe me, I know what a 7or 8 on the pain scale is. I really feel for you.

Well, spent the day working on my 'basket case' Yellowstone (under Spooky's supervision, of course). Put in a new articulated drive train, still haven't decided on whether or not to change out the original motor (runs well), had to jury-rig a loco-tender wire connection since the wireless drawbar was missing and I can't find one to fit it at all--this one's a REALLY early model (I'd say about 1960 or so) and is put together a little differently than the other two 1964 Akanes that I own. Got most of the cosmetic damage taken care of, though I'm going to have to fabricate a new step for the engineer's side of the boiler. Still have to fabricate new front steps for the centipede tender, which means another trip to the LHS for brass angles. But I got the electrical connections hooked up yesterday afternoon and test-ran the old girl, and with a little more tinkering, it should turn out to be a good little runner--like my other two, she weighs a TON, so she should haul pretty well. I'm changing out the Worthington FWH system to an Elesco 'bundle' type (I like their looks better, anyway), so as soon as PSC delivers my castings, I should have the old gal ready for priming and painting.

Why, you ask, do I need yet ANOTHER Yellowstone, right, LOL? I don't know, honestly. I just can't pass 'em up!

Anyway, have a great day, guys. Oh, and Flo--was that coffee GOOD today!

Tom

Evening all,

Philip Congratulations to your son, thats great stuff

i thought the quake was a strong gust of wind, heard it but assumed it was the weather, some houses fell right down others not a scratch, as it was only six miles deep it was felt up to 400 miles away, we'll see far more in NZ.

Tom, the answer is very easy! Same reason I have 3, 2-10-2's! Its because we like'em!

Congrats to your son Phillip! I bet even today he's still on cloud nine!

I woke up feeling like this today;

But now that I have some of Flo's good coffee in me, I feel a lot better.

Still doing without my smokes, coming on three months!:D:D

Time to go to eye Dr. myself. As Jeff said, with diabetes, I have to get checked every year and every year I get a new prescrip.

Yeah, my son's still pretty happy about last night!

On another front.......the wife is resting after her surgery this morning. She's fairily comfortable on Morphine and Percocet, so I headed home. I haven't slept in about 35hrs since I was up all night praying. Think I'll be turning in soon! They may let her go home tomorrow or they may keep her another night, we don't know yet. I guess the next 15-18hrs will answer that question. She wants to thank you all for the well wishes and prayers. Frankly, she's a little blown away by the fact that you all did that last time and this time for her since she's like not even a member of the forum and all. I told her that we're kind of like some wierd sort of family......some wierder then others! Anyways, I'm off to get some dinner and then maybe see how that bed feels!

Evening All ! Jeffrey How did the eye exam go ?My eye doctor has me coming every 4 months. I guess he wants to be extra cautious with my eyes also . Phillp sure glad that the wife's surgery is over . Prayers for a speedy recovery . Out of here . have a nice quiet night all !
