Mornin' everyone!

Just popping in to say hi before heading over to school for rehearsals.

Tom I'm not sure that what you are describing should be called "political correctness". To me that term means something else completely. What you are describing is a basic dishonestly on the part of the former Cubmaster. I would support you 100% if I were a member of your pack or your commissioner. I support making sure every youth has the help needed to advance, but the Scout needs to do their part and actually show the skills learned to receive the award. I have dealt with some parents like that as a Scoutmaster and never gave in to that "basic dishonesty" ever. I did offer extra help and assistance on many occasions.........

Have a good day!

Afternoon all

Carl you can't go wrong with Pikestuff buildings, there easy to build and detail and look the part

Wahey,,, first night in bed with no swimming in sweat, just got a cough that won't depart now, on the whole things are looking up, thank the lord for that, the last week and a bit has floored me, i recon i lost around 10-12 lbs. If an old person got this it could easily see them off into the next life, at present my sisters F-I-L has the same thing but he's on holiday in Crete, actually he's in intensive care in a very bad way, he's diabetic, almost alcoholic, and grossly overweight, now he's got pneumonia, i don't think he'll be coming home personally, the years of abuse have taken it's toll on his body which is the sad part,

We had some really nasty weather here last night and early this morning. Heavy rain, high winds, hail, etc. To top things off the power went out at four am. The power company got it back on about three and a half hours later.

Jeffrey, no rough weather here in T-town, but WOW is it ever raining!

Tom: Bravo! That was just another case of trying to get something without working for it and the parents supporting it. What will the boy expect when he becomes a man.

Ray

It is the outgrowth of political correctness. It even has a word it is called “inclusion”.

Scary, huh? How do I know?

My son’s basketball team had a terrible year. They won only one game and came in last place and thus were the bottom seed for tournament. Unbeknown to the coaches and parents apparently these kids had been tanking it all year and were taking it easy during the regular season. They lit up the scoreboard and breezed through the first two games. The semi-final game they won in the last minute. In the championship game they lead the whole game except the last three minutes and the game went back and forth before they decided to go on a tear and win by 6 points in the final minute. When it came time to hand out the trophies we found out that all the trophies were the same. One of the boys asked how come his championship trophy was no different than the last place trophy one of the people running the league told the boy he was being rude. When several of the parents asked the same question they were told that “the organization practices inclusion. They don’t want any of the boys feeling bad because they came in last place.” What a cold slap in the face to the efforts that my son’s team put forth. Now when we try to get the boys to perform to their best some of them turn around and say, “Why, I’m going to get a trophy no matter how good I do.”

Sad, we punish the achievers so that the slackers feel good.

Sorry for the rant. I will pass the soapbox now.

Tom,

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts on your Cub Scout Pack and your son's basketball team. However what your describing isn't "inclusion" IMHO.

The Boy Scouts of America for instance, has practiced inclusion since it's beginning and is one the most used institutions cited when people promote inclusion. This is what comes up in a search at the BSA National site if you search the word inclusion:

"Since its founding in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has had fully participating members with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. James E. West, the first Chief Scout Executive, was a person with a disability. Although most of the BSA's efforts have been directed at keeping such boys in the mainstream of Scouting, it has also recognized the special needs of those with severe disabilities.

The Boy Scout Handbook has had braille editions for many years; merit badge pamphlets have been recorded on cassette tapes for the blind; and closed-caption training videos have been produced for those who are deaf. In 1965, registration of over-age Scouts with mental disabilities became possible—a privilege now extended to many people with disabilities.
"

However, A handicapped Scout still has to do all the work to get Eagle! What your local Basketball league is practicing is just plain wishy-washy! They need to read up on what Inclusion means..... I have to deal with a very nice lady on one of the committees I work with here in town. She thinks that every child should should get a prize no matter how bad their work is. BULL!

"Sad, we punish the achievers so that the slackers feel good." You are absolutely right! We aren't very far apart on our thoughts, more of a disagreement in semantics.......;) :D

That in very thing, In childhood and as adult. We punish achievers, and we tax to death over achievers? sometime I just don't get it:confused:

Evening Guys!

You will never guess what I did this evening...... Nope not in a thousand years......

OK, I'll tell ya. I went and joined the Rochester (NY) chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. They own and operate the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Industry, NY. So now I am officially playing with 12" to the Foot sized trains......... They had several excellent slide presentations for their program. Very enjoyable and they gave me a warm welcome to the society.

Good morning folks

Another rainy morning and day. This has to be one of the wettest springs I can remember. It was 55 F on the way in this morning. Our high will be around 61 F.

I still have not gotten any modeling done despite my best efforts. Last night my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop had a tour of the police station. I helped my wife build a milk carton catapult from instructions in my son’s Webelos handbook. She wants to the scouts to build them so they can finish up their Engineer Activity badge requirements so she wanted to do one before hand to see how easy it was. The thing worked!

This weekend is another scout weekend. Tomorrow we will be going to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ with my son since it is their Scout Weekend. On Sunday we will be going to Dorney Park with the Girl Scouts.

If I can ever get some modeling done I would like to start weathering some gondolas I have setting on the work bench. I may even pull out a kit or two and work on them. I am thinking about trying one of the P2K stockcar kits I got a while back.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Good Morning Guys ! From sunshiny Buffalo for the time being . The front travling up the coast is ready to hit any moment so the rain is coming our way ! Now much going on around here .Just put on a new storm door on the back of the house . real exciting stuff. Well gonna go have acup of coffee and sit on the patio. Tom I can sympatize with wyou and your son . I'm just glad that my kids are older. Then again my son just called and said his car got broken into last night and what to do about it . So when they get older it doesn't get any better !!!!!!! Have a good day all !

Good Morning all!
Thank you all for the warm "welcome back"!
It is going to be a lovely day here in Colorado. Yesterday the mountains received a ton of snow and the Spring skiing (at the areas that have remained open) is going to be incredible. I do not ski very often...or very well. Last time I went, I mistakenly crossed over to a black diamond slope and had a spectacular wipe out. I ended up face down...feet first for about 25 feet. My mouth, nose and goggles were packed with snow and unfortunately this spill occurred directly under the lift. I did receive very high ratings from the wise guys on the lift. Almost a perfect 10. :)
Tom, until a few years ago, I had no idea what it took to become an Eagle scout. When my brother was stationed at Hill AFB, Utah, I went to his son's Eagle scout ceremony. I was amazed and quite impressed. My nephew, Steve, had EARNED that honor. It was no cake walk. Although I have no nephews in the Scouts right now, I remain impressed with the organization.
Supposed to be in the 80's here this weekend. I hope you all have wonderful, safe weather as well. Enjoy!
Sandy

Afternoon everyone!

A gray day here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 62°F and not going to get much warmer. Just got home from High School Chorus rehearsal in the Auditorium at school. I'm exasted and it is only lunch time. I have a bit of other work to get done this afternoon, and then I am going to play with the trains......!!!

Hope you are all having a great day!

Afternoon, everyone.

Got back from Atlanta yesterday about 6:00 pm. The Eagles were absolutely fabulous. They were well worth the outrageous ticket prices. They are all over 60 now but can still rock out pretty good. They played for 3 and a half hours with a 20 minute break. Not bad for old guys!:) Ray, you would have been in heaven seeing the amount of electronics on stage. You don't realize how much work it is putting on a concert like that until you see all the gear and all the people it takes to run it.

We were lucky not to have rain during the concert or while waiting outside for an hour for the shuttle busses to take us back to our parking lot. This was the first concert at the Verizon Encore Ampitheater and you could tell there's still some work to do on the logistics of getting people back and forth.

Drove back yesterday and it poured a flood almost the entire way. People, as usual, drove like maniacs. I posted in another thread about that. Of course, the minute I got the car in the garage, that rain stopped. :)

Steve, I hope you're coming out of that flu. It really does hit people hard, especially the elderly. Luckily, my garden variety cold cleared up before wwe went off to Atlanta.

Jeffrey, I'm glad to hear you are OK. It looked like Baton Rouge really got pounded by that storm. It was just rain for us.

Tom, too bad that kids have to learn such poor lessons from us adults. At least yours have a good father that can show them a better way.

Sandy, my son is back in Boulder for a month working and told me he's headed up to the mountains for one more ski session before they get back on the road again. I've tried skiing several times and finally gave up when I realized the five year olds were doing better than I would ever do. That does sound like quite a yard sale you had on that black diamond. :D

Ray, that's neat that you'll be able to get involved with the real thing. I belonged to what was then the Perris Valley Trolley Museum in California for a number of years and was one a crew restoring a Sacramento Northern steeple cab. It was quite a thrill to be handed the controller handle and be allowed to take her back and forth on our one mile mainline. That museum has expanded a lot since those days and I doubt someone like me would be allowed to just take a locomotive out and run it around.

Carl, I'm still torn about ordering the Pikestuff fire station. It's a little too modern for my layout but I'm thinking I could backdate the look some with different doors and a flat roof. They are great kits to build and a kitbasher's dream.

Chris, looks like you should be getting some much needed rain down there. It's awful early in the year for those fires to be breaking out.

It's cloudy and mild here after 1.30 inches of rain yesterday. I've done nothing but drive, it seems, for the past two days. I'm pretty sure that I still have a layout so I guess I need to go down to the basement to make certain. :D

Hey Ray, joining the NRHS and one of their active chapters sounds like it would be great fun. I'm envious!:p

Jim, I think they nailed an arsonist for the Florida fires.

Jim/Jeffrey: What is it about leaky faucets. You guys going on about your leaks and danged if I didn't end up replacing the kitchen faucet. It was a Delta, but was so worn out and the wife wanted a different type, I just replaced it this a.m. No fun since I had to work around a garbage disposal unit.

Steve Have you ever tried a Neti Pot for your sinus's. The one I have looks like an old tea pot. I have these premeasured packets of salt to make a saline solution. Tilt the head to one side and lean slightly forward and pour the solution into one nostril and it will come running out the other. Use half in one nostril and turn head the oposite way and do the other. It cleans all of the nasty stuff out and really feels good while doing it.
