Morning all.

It's a balmy 48F this morning and tje sun is shining bright. I love spring. :D

Temps were around 70F yesterday afternoon but, in typical Iowa fashion, winds were fairly steady at around 20 mph with 30mph gusts all day. I went and rode my bicycle for 3 hours anyways since I am way behind on my training for the year.

I almost have the roof of the enginehouse done and I am hopong to get the walls up soon. I would like to add a little bit more bracing for the corner joints for some extra stability first. Getting close though. :)

Good morning folks

It was a chilly 40 F as I stepped out of the house this morning. We are supposed to be heading to 67 F and then into the seventies for the rest of the week.

My wife and son have decided that the backyard needs a fountain. So last night we trekked off to Home Depot and got one, and a light kit. Then they started talking about what it needed around the base and in the garden near-by. Luckily for me, the labor in all this, we have Cub Scout Den Meetings tonight so no time for special projects.

No modeling last night.

Jim, thanks for the link. There is a lot of stuff on that sight the pack could use. We just now have to figure out a way to get the money. I just sat down with our pack treasurer to review the past year and begin the budget for next year. My frustrations with the previous administration continue to grow as I found out that even though I was told that there was a budget down for 2007-2008 it really wasn’t. Also the former Assistant Cubmaster who actually ran the pack the last two years as the Cubmaster was absent most of the time was our Popcorn Kernel this year. She was a very negative person (not pessimistic) and lazy person. I constantly butted heads with her regarding awards and programs. Her idea of giving awards out was at the end of the year and the only trip we do is a camping trip which she used as a family vacation. Well to get back on track I found out that almost half of our Popcorn Show and Sales were not covered. With what we covered and take orders our boys sold almost $8,000.00. The treasurer estimated if half the uncovered show and sells were covered we would have sold another $1,500.00 to $2,000.00. The thing that bothers both of us is our sons were on call and could have covered those stations. There were also several other boys looking for more time. She had been given a list to call if she needed someone. She never called anyone. Sorry for the rant but now that we are at the end of the year and need to purchase some things and the money is not there because someone didn’t do their job it is frustrating especially if we have to cancel the camping trip. BTW she is no longer with our pack. Her son was one of our biggest discipline problems. After a night in December in which he got physical with several other boys and several parents threaten to quit, the Committee Chairman and I confronted her about the situation. She had been threatening to quit most of the year so when she did so again we took her up on the offer and removed her from the Adult Leaders. We have not seen her or son since then.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Mornin' everyone!

Tom welcome to the world of "Volunteers"........... What you are describing is one of the reasons it is so important to get and USE the training offered by Scouting. Of course on some people, it appears to be a waste.

Beautiful, sunny day outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning. Right now it is 47°F with a projected high of 67° later. This is the type of weather I love, the time between shut down the furnace and turn on the air conditioner........

I have a hearing test later this morning so I can see how much I have lost and adjust the old ear plugs for it. Hopefully I will be able to hear things better again. The loaners I am using now, set to my old loss, seem to work well so I'm thinking most of my problem was the hearing aids were dirty and needed to be fixed.

Later!

Afternoon, everyone.

Tom, as Ray said, welcome to the world of volunteers. You are trying to apply project management principles to people who can tell you to fly a kite and there's nothing you can do with them. When I was put in charge of our county's search and rescue team, it took me about three years to get rid of all the slackers and hangers-on that just wanted a badge. It's a slow process but I finally ended up with volunteers I could depend on and learned real quick to pull the plug on those that I couldn't. I hope you can get things worked out for your pack. BTW, my wife keeps bugging me about a fountain. Let me know how easy (or hard) it was to get yours set up.

Ray, sounds much better than snow blower reports up there now. :) Speaking of snow blowers, I haven't seen Paul lately. I hope the cleaning job restores your hearing aids. I have a rare inner ear disorder called Meniere's Syndrome which has made me deaf in my left ear and hearing aids won't help since the nerves have been destroyed. At least it hasn't moved into my other ear yet so I'm lucky there.

Afternoon, or I guess evening over across the pond, Steve. Is that dove still attacking your mirror? We had some fairly strong winds yesterday and I finally had to get the squirt bottle after that mockingbird. He was riding the anemometer for 15 straight minutes and I could just hear all my bearings getting shot. As much fun as it was to watch him, I'd really rather not spend $200 for a new anemometer right now.

Beautiful day down here with sunny skies and a temperature of 76. As Ray said, we are in that short window between having the heat on and the a/c running 24 hours a day. If the weather was like this all the time, it would be about as close to paradise as you could find. I'm off to plant some rose bushes I've had for a week and have been putting of getting in the ground. Hope everyone has a good day.

Gooooooooood afternoon everyone. Flo need a large cup of coffee to hold me over 'til dinner.

Went to the Hearing place this morning and my hearing aids had come back. Yea! The teckie had them all set to my old curve and my hearing is back! They also didn't have me scheduled for a hearing exam..... It must be that the date I had in my calendar was when I was supposed to make an appointment for it. We decided that since the fixed hearing aids are working well for me there was no real reason to have the test right now. I will postpone it a year or two.

I came home and did some garden work outside that was long overdue. The weather is supposed to be idealic for the next several days so I plan to get some peas planted tomorrow and repair the snow plow damage that the city does every year. I also found some turnouts on the layout (that will be inspected next week) that never had the frog wired...... That is a must do before next week. There are about 8 turnouts that run locos all run fine through but do not have the wiring.

Good morning folks

It was 45 F as I headed out onto the roadways this morning. High will be 75 F.

Had a rough night at Cub scouts last night. I had to break the news to folks that in order for us to go camping everyone including adults have to have medical forms completed. Most people accepted this but a couple got down right upset over it. One of them was our Committee Chairman. He is the last member of the previous administration that screwed up the pack the past five years. He kept saying that it was never required in the past so why should we do it now. There were also a couple of other rules that we now must enforce that he was not happy with. Of course the biggest problem and why nothing got done correctly in the past is outside of some initial training none of the leaders had any additional training. Up until my wife and me getting the camping training no one in the pack had gotten it for at least five years. I knew going into the meetings that there would be a few people who would have problems and the Committee Chairman lived down to my expectations.

No modeling last night.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Happy Thursday everybody.

50F and overcast here with a predicted three days of rain starting this afternoon. They are making great progress on getting our road redone so it's too bad that the rain will be here to stop them in there tracks.

I have a 3 hour bike ride planned for this afternoon but, since it will be raining I might get some modeling done instead. :)

Tom- It may seem a little frustrating now but, when you get everything "cleaned up" it will be very much worth the efforts. Tje biggest benefit will be the increased enjoyment that the Scouts will experience.

Mornin' Bill!

Mornin' Jeffrey!

Mornin' Tom! Where is your pack commissioner? One of my responsibilities as a commissioner is to be there to offer support from the district in those situations. If you have one, get him or her involved.... If you don't, camp out on the District Executives doorstep until he or she makes sure that you have one that will do the job. I am very surprised that your pack didn't get sent home from camp. Obviously the medical officer was not doing the job! Ask your Chairman if he can spell LIABILITY......... Ain't volunteering fun?

Mornin' Carl!

It is already 61°F here in the Finger Lakes, going up to 73° this afternoon. I had better get out and do some work I need to do on the lawn before it gets too hot out there............. ;) :D

I had planned on starting the mowing today until I remembered the Kubota has an oil leak. So I got some degreaser and dug out the power washer and doid some clean up. I found that the leak is in the fuel system where the lines from the fuel pump go to the injectors. Now to figure out what is leaking, cracked line, bad fitting or cracked pump. I may have to take it to the Kubota place in Columbia City and have them take a look see. Needless to say no mowing was started but I did do fine job of cleaning up the tractor and even got the wax out after it and it sure do look good, in fact me thinks the tractor is stylin.

Went to see my foot doctor this morning. He's very happy with the progress I'm making on my foot care. The wound has healed by another twelve millimeters. When I got home I checked the mail and found a padded envelope containing a slightly used Lenz LE1014-JST Drive Select decoder. Current rating is 1 amp continuous current and it has four function outputs. I'm thinking about putting it into the P2K E6 that I recently rebuilt. I must be doing something right. I've gotten three locos (two dummies and one powered) and two decoders in the mail in less than two months. One of the locos and one of the decoders were complete surprises, I had no idea whatsoever that they were coming.

Afternoon, everyone.

Jeffrey, I wish people would send me things in the mail I didn't expect other than bills. :) I'm glad to hear your wound is still healing.

Larry, you must love that tractor to give it a wax job. The problems you're having with the tractor is one of the reasons I pay a lawn service. I've only got a little less than an acre but the lot is mostly sloping and I can just see myself flipping over a tractor and killing myself. It costs $20 a week and I figure I'd spend that on medical bills and tractor repairs, not even figuring in the heatstroke issue down here. :D

Ray, sounds like the weather is finally turning nice. We had an Explorer post that was part of our sheriff's department search and rescue team. Talk about paperwork! It got really bad when all the sexual harassment rules came out and we were theoretically not allowed to have a female Explorer assigned to a team with adult males unless we had a female adviser on the team as well. With a grand total of one female adviser, that was just not possible on a search. Our District Executive helped us get waiver from the BSA so a good DE can really help get past the BSA bureaucracy. When I retired, the whole discrimination thing because of the BSA policy about believing in God was starting to boil over, since the county was the Post sponsor. I'm glad I got out before I had to get involved in that fight. I swear, there are some people out there that just want to destroy a great organization for their own political agenda with no thought as to the damage it does to the kids involved. :(

Tom, I hope you get some help from your higher-ups working with these recalcitrant adults.

Carl, I'm sure the farmers will be happy to see the rain even if the road construction crews won't. You must be getting in pretty good shape if you're doing 3 hour bike rides. A half-hour for me and I'm about to pass out.

Steve, we have an increasing number of morons over here installing big air horns in their cars and going around scaring people. I don't know if this guy is one of that crowd. In California, it's illegal to have an air horn installed in a passenger car with more than two trumpets. Pulled over a guy one night that we had noise complaints on and he had a Nathan 5 chime shoehorned under the hood of a Honda Civic with a huge air compressor and tank in the trunk. It was a pretty ingenious installation and I'm sure not cheap but we wrote him a ticket and he had to rip it all out and bring it down for inspection or lose his driver's license. I told him if hadn't been blowing the horn at old ladies he would have been fine since I'm a railfan but scaring the heck out people for fun went over the line.

A fine day here with clear skies and a temperature of 80 degrees. No rain in our forecast until late Friday when we have another chance of severe weather. The squall lines should be coming through about 2 am Saturday, which will limit their severe potential and give us some more needed rain. My lawn is actually green for the first time since I moved in two years ago.

Jim there is a fog horn on a lighthouse were go away, thats loud but that one on the video could beat it hands down i recon, it must cost a small fortune to buy something like that, scaring old folks is way out of order. Very few people do that stuff over here, i have never seen or heard a car with a loud horn, just the normal little air horns and the like, nothing like a train horn, you can buy them but it's mostly heavy truck drivers who get them.

BTW the birds still talking to itself in the mirror, along with a pigeon who has also taken a fancy to itself :)

The U.S. Geologic Survey reports that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 has struck the mid-west.

The USGS Web site says the quake was centered near West Salem, Illinois, or about 40 miles northwest of Evansville, Indiana.

No injuries or serious damage is reported here in the Wabash Valley. We have just received word that there is no phone service in Gibson County, Indiana.

The earthquake was felt as far north as Kokomo, Rochester and Warsaw in Indiana, as well as in Evansville and Indianapolis. It shook tall buildings in downtown Indianapolis.

In Illinois, a dispatcher at the Edwards County sheriff's department says only minor damage has been reported, but so far there've been no injuries.

About 15 miles from the epicenter a woman was trapped in her Mt. Vernon home by a collapsed porch but was quickly freed and wasn't hurt.

The quake shook skyscrapers in downtown Chicago, some 230 miles away.

News 10 continues to gather more information on this story.
