CMHN's Layout Build

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

They'll have to run back around the peninsula to pick up the train after it rounds the curve, assuming no reverse loop on the bubble and clockwise running for example. But that might be a small inconvenience, depending on several factors.

You might want to consider a sectional or non-sectional around the walls / donut layout for continuous running but that would require a lift-out or duck-under which some folks find problematic. You could always add a central peninsula later, sort of like Barrow's Cat Mountain and Santa Fe version 2 (3?). Take a Google at the Heart of Georgia ("A better beginner's layout") for ideas.

This is something the layout at the club I go to does. You have to backtrack about thirty feet to the end of the peninsula and then back up the other side to get to your train only to re-trace your steps once more. Not sure I would like that and it really has you bumping into one another on ops nights.

Certainly a potential issue - It all depends on the track layout and if/where view blocks are used. Plus, how many "operators" are likely? [I'm not arguing BTW, it's just another "givens & druthers" question.....]

However, there's any easy fix, assuming enough space (as always!) - Drag the whole thing away from the walls - CMHN apparently has walls at top and right of the diagram - Move the whole mess down and to the left to allow operators to walk clear round it in both directions.

Cheers,
Ian
