Building the Pinnacle Creek Mining & Timber Co. RR

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I'd rather ride over your trestle Jim, than that spindly steel tube and guywire one that was posted elsewhere a few days ago.

Sherrel, Yes, occasionally I will add some steam/smoke to locos. Using PSElements is way beyond me. Toot, I didn't see the steel tube bridge, but my trains haven't broken down my bridges yet. Jim:)

As I get older I find myself reminiscing and generally taking a look behind me. Same goes for model railroading. Not really sure when I started, but it was late in life. Around 11 years ago I guess. I would have been 60 then. It was pointed out to me by a friend how real my first layout looked. I asked what did he meant. He said, 'Well, I'm not sure, but it just looks like it could be real.' That layout was a small 26"x36" Z scale layout located on my sailboat I lived on. After my wife and I moved ashore and I got my 'train room' that word, real, became my focus. Somehow scenery was the deal. I've done a good job, I guess, been published 6 times and get the oohs and aahs when folks come to see my work. I don't know that I made any 'innovations' in the hobby, but I think I improved the way of doing things when scenery is involved.

Interestingly enough I think one of my best contributions, to table top modeling at least, was the idea to put this layout on casters! A miracle really. I'd never seen casters on a layout before and because of photography it just seemed a natural thing to add. I can easily spin this layout around with one hand; handy for photography. I like it. Jim:D

You're spinning the layout around????. How will I ever tell whether it's morning or evening light now Jim?

Toot, I've already fooled you in regards to spinning; but I won't tell a soul!

Lynnb, I really like the Pawn Shop I saw on your thread. Nice. Jim:)

Further thoughts and speculations. I've done nothing in the layout room or on the layout itself for two weeks. I have taken photos and that's all. Generally by two weeks I'm looking forward to the next project. Not so this time. In fact, if I can lift it, I'm taking the tool box out to the shed today! Jim

WOW! Does this mean that I may have a chance to actually see this one in action before it gets torn down?

Toot, Funny you should mention a video. I've been searching my layout room for a couple of weeks and can't find the camera! I will continue to search. Jim:eek:

Thank you Sherrel. Remember I have been published five times in the past. Dealing with MR or RMC is something of a nightmare, thus I leave them out of the loop. Unless you're in the in-crowd, or someone who models to 'make a living', it is tough to wait two to three years for a 'possibility' your work may get published. So if you know someone working for the mags let them know there is other talent out there other than the same monotonous dozen guys who seem to be published each year. Jim:mad:

I suspected some of that was the case. It seems to me that you'd want to be more timely than 2-3 years, but I guess as long as the material has been turned in to the publisher it really doesn't matter. I know with the reintroduction of RMC they were looking for new material. I don't know if that is still the case. Either way, I have a lot of work to accomplish before I could even consider doing an article.

RR, If you are fortunate to start this hobby at 61 years old like I did and for some reason you are blessed with some innate skills just being in your 60's is reason enough for impatience with the publishing 'system.' I have actually had folks, with my permission, submit to MR Trackside Photos photos of my work through the years. Seriously, is some of my best stuff not worthy? Anyway, we never heard from MR. I sent them a few photos of an N scale layout a few years back and they said they were filled up for the year or so, but thanks anyway. I didn't even want to be paid and still no joy. So, I just gave up. Jim

About 1500 views to go until the Half Million Contest. It will be the photo comparison again. Prizes are: Either HO or O scale trees; A box of N scale trees; or an HO 2-8-0 DCC/sound loco. Worth playing for? Jim:)

Model RR supplies are always worth playing for.

Jim, you sent me a video camera when I bought the engines and cars. Is that the one you're looking for?
