Johne, Well, not really very well done, but thanks anyway. I've decided to build my own small station and probably a water tower. So, when I'm done with those and the little scenery I have left finished I will try and do a better video. Jim:)

Thanks for the visit Mike.

NEW VIDEO! Will wonders never.................

Spiral Storm, Remember I'm not the most computer savvy guy you know, but maybe I have this vid done correctly. I played it back to myself and it is crappy, and for some reason finished abruptly. I've never loaded anything to YouTube before either. Jim

I tried the link and it works! Sorry, it isn't the greatest I've seen.

@ HOexplorer this is...Amazing! My real world kept me from being able to see the video sooner. However, I notice the little scene by the lake with your fishermen is missing. Whatever happened to this little scene if I may ask? I really liked it a lot and I'd love to see it again. Kudos on the video though-You did an awesome job in spite of not being so computer-savvy.

SS, Glad you finally got back here. I hope it is want you wanted? The little scene you refer to was a miner panning for gold in the creek. Not fishing. Also, I never had a fisherman in the little pond on the hill. You might be thinking of someone else's layout. Of course, the reason the miner is gone is because that was an HO character and from now on On30 is what this thread and layout is all about.

Back to some business. I can't wait for the fellow that makes the buildings I like so I've decided to make my own station. I worked on it the last two days and I'm about 66% finished. Jim :)

PS Looking at this photo I'm thinking of cutting off the top row of siding. Looks okay on the desk, but in this photo I'm not so sure.

Jim,

I'd leave that top layer until you got to the roofing stage, then see how it looks, especially if you are going to run your frame work across the tops of your corner studs. Just a thought, but it is looking very rustic and does fit the scene nicely.

Toot, If that carpenter is me you are correct.

Tony, I agree with you 100%........NOW that I have cut the top board off. I'm no builder and I didn't think this through enough. I forgot to take into account the roof over hang and pitch! I'm probably going to have to settle for a roof with less pitch than I want now. Bummer. Jim

Hello again, Explorer! I am glad to be back again. It's a shame you had to get rid of the little scene with your HO-scale miners panning for gold in the river. It was one of the best layout scenes I've ever seen! Pardon the pun...XD! What is the reason for you switching from HO-scale to On30 all of the sudden? I love the video and please do tell. I am eager to hear your tales.

SS, I'm switching because of age I guess. Just turned 70, and with my bad back and arthritic fingers even HO got too small let alone Z and N. With On30 I get to have more layout because it uses HO track. Pieces are bigger for easier handling and scratch building seems easier. Another plus is photography. On30 lends itself to better photos because the rolling stock is larger. Another plus is that On30 folks tend not to be rivet counters and that I find is a good thing. Jim:o

Before you go reducing the wall height Jim, is that caboose's cupola shorter than the walls when placed next to the station? If it is and by say, a board width or so, then you can have a gable end roof on the station building that has no overhangs, but have a low pitch awning roof over the platform and track (partially), supported with the curved braces you see on lots of stations. Just as long as the awning and those supports will clear your tallest rolling stock (i.e. the caboose?)

Toot, I've already reduced the height one board. However, I was smart enough to measure all the rolling stock for clearances before I cut. Hope to finish the roof today. Jim :)

Oops, well, I am sure you will be able to get it to look as you want. What you could do is have a slightly angled extended eave/roof then have the pitch of the roof the way you want it. Alternatively, you could do something like what I did with my Freight Shed and have your roof joists extend out over the front of the building to gain your pitch but also retain a good clearance. If that makes any sense at all????

Building is coming along. Time to paint. Jim :)

Jim I'm glad your doing a scratch build, I need to do one in the very near future and this may be just what I need to get me going. By the way I had seen boards on post 2714 but now I don't on this, am I missing something? Whats the material your using ? Almost looks like sign board.

What Tony is referring to here is a cantilevered awning roof. The joists/rafters for the awning rest on the top of the wall as a fulcrum point and are extended across the ceiling of the building, finishing under the rafters on the opposite side. Usually there is an underpurlin running lengthwise between the ends of those awning rafters and the main roof rafters to spread the load evenly across the roof structure. This is a bit complicated for a model, just depends how prototypical you want to be. The usual ratio of outer rafter to inner is about 1/3rd outside to 2/3rd's inside for an otherwise unsupported awning roof.

This also means that the roofing materials joint line (break angle) is higher up the roof of the building than the other side.

Great, where were you guys when I started this project? Good info, but far beyond my learning curve. I'm trying to figure out shingles or roof coverings. The station is finished except for that. Jim:)

Jim,

If you haven't installed the roofing, it may not be too late.

This is what Toot and I were talking about (in pictures)

You would have to redo the outside walls, extending the base length, but using sign board will make doing this this much easier. You might want to add a couple of support sections for the roofing as well to give it a bit more strength and save the possibility of sagging.

When all's said and done though, your doing fine with what you have, especially if this is one of your first scratch built buildings :)

If you ever do want any advice though, for future reference, just ask and I (or anyone) will be more than happy to help you out.

Almost finished. A plate for the bottom of the overhang poles and some 'station' stuff. This was fun. There are even walls and a counter inside the station. I had to come up with a name and since I'm standing in a canyon the name for this whistle stop became Canyon. I will also have an order board attached when I finish assembling it and a chimney is in the mail. Jim
