Building the Pinnacle Creek Mining & Timber Co. RR

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Thanks Tony and Lynn. I hate roads and now I'm doing this short one in O scale. Reminds me of an airport runway. I'll get it done this week then concentrate on the small villiage and be done with this only to get excited about the final layout down the road a ways. I have to check and see if anyone else want an open house here first. Jim :)

Spiral Storm, Welcome. Love the name by the way. As for a video tour, yes, I will do one for you and the rest. Most of the regulars here know me as a still photographer, and one who is just not into videos. I don't know why. I have a Nikon camera I never use and it has a great video system. I will use it. I may mention that some folks get lost in the thread, it being so long these days, and think that this is all some layout in a living room sized room. It is not. This thread contains two layouts and is built in a small 10'x11' spare bedroom. My point is that what I will film is not a big layout, but one that is quite small. The trick here is explained in the thread. Basically, layouts that are small, mine, can be made larger by taking close up photos. Keep checking in in the next couple of weeks. Jim :)

Got to work on the roads again today. I added some dark wash to the cement road and poured a tinted "dirt" roadway for the village. The color was only for the plaster base. On top of the 'dirt' plaster roadway I sprinkle some fine desert tan rocks. I want the dirt road to NOT look like everyone else's. I didn't go out and get dirt, sift it, then dump it onto the plaster. I'm doing this my way staying true to the initial tenet of this thread: "Building layouts with minimum expense using readily available scenic materials." Driving to Southern Colorado for the 'right' dirt does not fit into this criteria. So, good or bad, success or failure, I try to show you possible alternatives. In this photo you can see the original plaster dirt roadway with the sprinkled gravel moving toward the grade crossing. This is still wet. When it dries a bit more I will score the dirt roadway with some tire ruts. Jim :)

@ HOexplorer thanks for the warm welcome! You and Montanan (You may have heard of him on here) are the two guys who made me decide to build my own HO-scale railroad layout. After much debate with other model railroaders, I am going to stick with HO-scale in spite of the fact my Power Trains are closer to TT-scale due to the fact HO scale is the most popular scale and also because there may be certain buildings or features I want on my layout which may not be available in TT scale. Once I get my next Power Trains, I will gladly take new pictures and show you on here...Cheers!

SS, I do know of Montanan. What I didn't know was what Power Trains were until 2 minutes ago. I understand the battery concept, but I'm not sure Power Trains lends itself to 'realistic' modeling possibilities.

As for HO, I'm sure your realize you will need power to your track. Are there battery HO engines? I don't know. Good luck and above all have fun. Jim:)

I'm sure most of you will remember the HO yard. It was flat with hills rising behind. On this On30 version I put in some very low mounding. Something different to display my few buildings. While you've seen the dirt road half finished here is what is under it. Jim:)

I just took the following picture a minute ago. All dried and ready to go.....maybe. I will have to weather this dirt road the same as the concrete road. Jim:)

Some progress. In this photo you can see where the HO road used to be. (to the track's left) Gone now and I have an aching back to prove it. Jim:)

Thanks for the visit Mike.

NEW VIDEO! Will wonders never.................

Spiral Storm, Remember I'm not the most computer savvy guy you know, but maybe I have this vid done correctly. I played it back to myself and it is crappy, and for some reason finished abruptly. I've never loaded anything to YouTube before either. Jim

I tried the link and it works! Sorry, it isn't the greatest I've seen.

It's as good at least as many others on YT Jim, and sure shows of your work. Makes the layout look huge. I guess the cats don't get much access to that room, looked kind'a bewildered. BUT, WHERE"S THE RUNNING TRAIN?????

Toot, Thanks, I'll send you a fiver! The cats have free access to the train room. Tobie, the big boy, used to get up there when he was young. He's almost 5 now and knows the top of the bench work is out of bounds. Evie, is 10, and I never found her up there after the first time. I yelled, "NO", and she's the perfect kitty because of it. Cats can easily learn rules if one cares to teach them. Little Evie is the love of my life, don't tell my wife, and will sit on my lap while I ponder the next layout issue. Jim:o

PS The next video will have running trains.

MR113, Thank you. As for the video, I guess I hit the Off button while I was trying not to turn the camera upside down to show the other mine!?? Anyway, I will put some thought into videos and see what I can come up with. I did not realize how long the upload time to YouTube. How does someone upload a 15 minute video? I must take 3 hours? Jim:)

Jim I always enjoy videos of home layouts and especially the critter actors Toby and EV.:D Very nicely done.

Thanks Lynn, I have another mini-cam coming in the mail for train mounted shots. Hopefully it will be better than last years camera. I need to get a station and I will probably build my own on the basis of what I already have. I need a water tower as well and this layout will be finished.

Today, I am going to do some work, painting and weathering, three new cars my wife bought me Saturday. Nice. Jim :o

What kind of cam are you getting Jim? Nice of your wife to buy you some cars , must want to keep you out of trouble.
