Rico, Trees are nice.These type of trees work okay, but this certainly isn't the 'desert landscape' I had originally planned. Jim
 


Stoker, A couple of things. First, these are pine trees. I've stated that this Southern Division is located in Southern Colorado and Northern NM. After I added these trees Southern Colorado more than NM has these effects. Like this photo shows.

One could almost believe those trees are growing out of solid rock. Here on the layout you would see that all these trees grow out of dirt not solid rock. Actually, if you have a crack in a cliff or rock face you have the potential to have a tree growing out of it.

Second, the "idea" of the refurb was to illustrate how two, trees and changing rock color, simple changes could have a dramatic effect on our layouts if we feel a need for change. My layouts, as are most, are simply reasonable representations of places. Lastly, here is a photo from your state showing trees seemingly growing out of rocks.



One fellow I know has a signature' on his posts that goes something like this: Everything goes, if you search long and hard enough you will find it in the 1:1 world. Jim

Stoker, Of course they are the same trees. Not really giants as they average about 35 HO feet tall. Also, this was a demonstration on how to refurb a layout with simple additions of trees and color. Not sure what is wrong with that? Jim
 
Stoker, Fair enough. I did mention in the Refurb demonstration that these trees did indeed move the deserty terrain out of NM and into a less arid Southern Colorado. The gnarly trees are now dead trees from the last brush and forest fire I guess. Thanks for your opinion. I welcome them all. Jim
 
To be honest, my first reaction was similar to Stoker's. Not that trees are out of place but the type of tree seems wrong to me. IMO the trees need to be a different type of fur or pine. Somewhat fuller. These look fine for a more Northern area (like PCM&T)

I am far from a tree expert, nor an terrain expert for your modeled area. I'm just basing it on my eye. And the 1:1 pictures posted seem to agree.
 
Must be something in the water. Let me run the Refurb part of this by you fellows one last time. The whole idea of the Refurb section was to show what we could do, if we wanted, to our old layouts and modules. It in NO way was meant as anything other than to show what coloring rocks and planting trees could do for a layout/module. The tree type is not an issue to me. Given the parameters of the Refurb topic it shouldn't be an issue with you guys either. The trees were on hand and if this 'replanting' was in the context of building the layout then I can see some concerns. It is my layout that has one side changed before tear down not yours. I used the side as a teaching example, I'm sorry you can't seem to comprehend this. Jim

Having sirfoldsalot over to visit must be a riot. He not only has a keen eye, he always adds an interesting perspective to things! I always enjoy his posts.
