Soooo...
I hear that Atlas is going to offer a NRE Genset switcher in HO scale. It will be part of the Trainman Plus line, which features seperately applied details (not included with standard Trainman line) and an 8-pin DCC plug. Unfortunately, no DCC and I doubt there's a sound decoder specifically for this prototype.
It will be available in BNSF, CSX, NS, UP, and Pacific Harbor Line paint schemes.

For those who don't know, a Genset switcher is a very fuel-efficient locomotive. They are reasonably new locomotives (MTH also just announced the first model in O scale).

I, personally, am thinking of getting one of these. (perhaps I should wait until BNSF's new hydrogen-powered locomotive comes out to "go green" though :p) Anybody else think they might buy these? (or anyone here who has ever even seen one?)

I am ordering 4 of them so far (2 for myself and 2 for a customer) :D

All 4 BNSF (2 each number) but am also thinking of picking up a set of the UP's too.

Josh (jbaakko) is working on building me a pair of Genset RP20BD's for my Modesto Engine Fleet, they should be pretty sweet as well!!

it;s kinda ugly :(

i've seen the csx ones up in the bronx :)
you make them in n scale and i'll buy one or two

I'm interested in them it just depends on the funds when they come out :) I will probably a quire one at some point, doesn't matter the road name as it will be painted Conrail Blue! I will say though that gensets aren't the most attractive locos, they all seem to have weird proportions that just make them look goofy.

I plan to get one or two of them, for my own railway.

Ken, Whats wrong with a BL2? They are very stylish!

I like the look of these locomotives. I plan on getting 2-4 UP's, 1-2 BNSF, 1 CSX, maybe 1 PHL. I also plan on converting the a few of the UP's into complete RCL units with functoning rooftop lights/beacons, and appropriate RCL antennaes/stands.

I've seen the prototype. The headlight and ditchlight arrangement makes them look like CF-7s at night.

Trucklover, if I preorder, do I have to pay in advance or put in a deposit, or do I pay when they are released?

No upfront payment is required for Pre-Ordering/backordering an item(s). What i usually do with Pre-Orders is notify you when there coming close to be released to make sure you still want the item. If you dont, then we can cancel it right then and there. If you do then i will keep the item on order and you can either send the payment then so the item can ship to you immediately after it comes to my shop, or you can pay for the item when it comes in at my shop, its up to you.

Ok, put me down for both road numbers for NS. I'll let you know if I change my mind.

Sounds good, :D

Ill get them written down in my orders book and place them on order with Walthers tomorrow. BTW, you have a PM regarding your Genset Order

In case anyone is wondering, these are due late January 2010.

I agree they look weird but they are built to be cheap so no money for anything but 90 degree bends of sheet metal. They actually remind me of Alco C-415's more than anything else. I wonder if QSI will offer a sound file for these?

I think I might get a couple CSX ones, but then I'd have to add DCC and sound, not exactly the most enticing prospect when you've already got half your engines that will need decoders added.
I like these, though, not least because they're short and easy to reach over. I, unlike some other people, actually think they look reasonably cool. (though they're somewhat weird-looking actually coupled to a train, they're switchers, they'll be on their own a lot more than a road loco)
My view on this is: If the prototype runs 'em, I'll run 'em.
I do hope somebody gets sound for these. I might not buy them otherwise, I like good sound.

I like nre's genset switcher design. To me it reminds me of the old alco rs-1's. Stripped down no frills easy to build and maintain.

I knew I had seen something that looked like this before. For some reason I had forgotten about the existence of RS-1s
