A new beginning inspired from my old Central Midland Layout

Ok sometimes you have to brag about a deal and here is the deal I am going to brag about. ....He said "how about $50.oo dollars ? " I said " For each?" " No " he said " for all of them, you are a good customer and I'll deliver them to the house for you too"

Do you believe that?? What I deal. I told him I would think about it, NOT! ;):o

So a little elbow grease and here they are, they look great. I guess that is my Christmas gift.

An awesome deal indeed! Great score!

Speaking of kids running the trains, particularly your 'valued ones'. I saw a neat solution offered. Give them there own train. You can buy them a cheap engine that is specifically denoted as their very own loco. Then they will want to run that one, and leave yours alone.

Note to self: Grandkids are years away (I hope!) but I like this idea and want to remember it!

I need you valued opinions on this

Ok guys this is where I struggle. I am working on a hard part of the layout in which I have to cross over two mains and then slowly curve into the back side of the layout. I struggled finding anything that I could use to accomplish this. So I decided to scratch build a viaduct from foam. This way I could build a large viaduct that curves. My influence for comes from a viaduct we have here in town and some that I saw when I was in Germany. The rocks that I carved into the foam are of German influence. Maybe not north American correct but like I here people say " It's your railroad, do what you want" I did a quick paint under the viaduct to show some of my ideas.

BE HONEST, you can't hurt my feelings. I don't want to carve the rest of it if you don't like it. ( My wife says I am too critical of myself and I can't be happy with my own work) Maybe true:D

So here are a few PIX

Thanks
Eric

I think it looks good Eric.
I might have used more of a stone wash color instead of that darker color.
And you carved all that by hand??! How long did that take?
I thought I had a pretty decent level of patience - now I'm not so sure.

Keep going!!

I think it's great. It's your railroad. I don't know what prototype you are modeling but if not one in particular what does it matter. That said it is naked sitting on plywood so I would keep going forward as it's personality will definitely change when it's no longer naked. Nice work!

I have a couple of hours in carving and painting it. Thanks for the input

A couple hours. That's all? I could handle that with no problem. Seems/looks like a lot tedious monotonous effort. Both of which bore me after a while. It was all I could do to get myself through a fleet-wide (maybe 30 or so cars) coupler and wheelset swap out.

No real Prototype . I have always nicknamed my railroads "ANY ERA RAILROAD" I live in a small town that has anything from the 1800's to current and I like that. In my railroad town you will mainly see older buildings but don't be surprised if you see a newer model car driving down the streets. I like so much I just go with it.

Eric I am a pretty patient person. I enjoy this part of it. I carved all the rocks with a #2 pencil sharpened pretty good and some it with an exacto knife. After I got done I tapped around on it with a wire brush to give it that "worn and rough" effect. I will experiment with the colors. I can always paint over and over again.;)

Edited - here is a closer shot of the texture

I hope to get some pictures of some progress this weekend. I am waiting for some items and can't lay any more track until then. Then I leave for Florida March,11th and the layout will be on hold. Sooooo...... stay tuned progress will be slower as soon as it warms up because the rest of the house has to get done.:( . Thanks for all your input and comments.

Updated Photos as of 3-1-2015

Well I did get some more road bed down over the last few days and I am probably at a standstill until I get some items in. I need some turnouts and I don't know if they will be in before I leave for Florida. So I took some pictures of what I do have done. Might be the last update until I get back. We'll see what this weekend brings.

Ditto what Chet et.al. said!
I'd someday love to be a part of a "ground up" build like that.

It's really starting to look like something. I guess you'll have some trains running soon. View attachment 56065

Chet it is driving me crazy now. It is like the "Wedding of the Rails" . I can't wait til it meets and then some running of the trains. I know that with all that I have planned over the next few months I won't have trains running maybe until June. :( But that is the way it goes. I promise I will up date this thread as I get the things done. Big train show this weekend and I am going to spend some money if they have some things I need. Again thanks for the input.

When I was starting my layout many many moons ago, I had to see some trains moving. I was hand laying track which was time consuming, but when I had around 30 to 40 feet of track down, I had to put power to the track and "test" the track work to make sure that I had laid the track properly and wouldn't have any derailments.

Amazing you said that because tonight I did fire up a section of track to test it. Ran my first engine on it. It is a switcher with dcc sound and it was good to hear it.;)

Really pumps me up plus it is a good way to test things.
