24" X 14" Diorama project

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Well, doing this diorama has taught me one valuable lesson ... Matte Medium isn't an adhesive like I thought it was :( This has been a small stumbling block which has resulted in me having to spray a water/pva mix over the entire scene and am now waiting for it to dry. The down side to this is that it (water/pva) seems to darken the colors a little.

Anyway, aside from that, I have begun placing some of the basic foliage, grass, underbrush etc. I am using the Scenic Express stuff that I bought instead of the Woodlands. What I have found is the Scenic Express Turf and so forth appears a lot larger than the Woodlands, in other words, it doesn't seems as fine. I bought the Shaker Bottles of cover and discovered that they don't "sprinkle" any where near as well as the Woodlands. This was due to much f it being clumped as if it had gotten moist.

Okay, so for the "actual" update (pictures to follow). I have completed the standard New York road and river and have started work on the scratch built buildings starting with a run down garage. I have also laid the concrete pad for the garage. Keep a watch out for the pictures which I will get up once the glue and so forth has dried.

Nearing the end...

One more update showing the completed road, river, garage concrete pad and base foliage:

Okay, well thaat's it for the moment. Still working on the buildings so once they are done I'll post another update.

Thanks for looking and commenting guys

Thought I should add a couple of shots of my Scratch Built Garage for comment. Has been built using 1/8th Bass for the framing and 1 X 10 (scaled) for the weather boards. I will be putting in scratch built window pains as well, using 2 X 6 scaled lumber, even though that isn't true to realism. The roof will be made from 1/32 Bass sheeting that will be covered with Black/Grey Shingles.

I am yet to do the rear wall and the 1/8th piece of bass wood running across the front of the garage will be removed.

This has been fun to put together, so far, and sets me up to build the farm house, with porch over the next few days. Bear i mind, the farm house will only be a part house due to space.

Its my pleasure Tony and I got another idea from you!

You may know I primarily focus on O scale and I love vehicles. My problem is O scale vehicles are all over the place as far as size goes. Even if you have 2 items, say 1:43 scale if they are from different manufactures they can be different sizes and not look right together.

This idea I borrowed from you was to use some of the ones that don't match up on my layout in a separate scene. Now instead of languishing in a box I can take them out and enjoy them!

Thanks again for sharing your work!

Glad the use of "scrap" for a small diorama has come in handy, but am a little surprised that using scrap in this way hasn't been done before by some one. I figured that I pay for this stuff so why not use it :)

Make sure you put up some shots of what you do Louis too so I can get some ideas :)

Tony--Very realistic with the tracks following the stream and the roadway above going through a tunnel. Great work.

lasm,

Thank you, it has been a lot of fun doing this - no stress involved like building a layout :) It more or less replicates where I live, at least the road, railroad and river, we don't have a tunnel.

It has been awhile since I updated this post, so here is an update. For those who have followed the building of the Garage and Homestead I have now started on putting in some more detailed scenery, tree's, under growth, fences etc. This is what I have thus far:

After all of the work I have put into this, I now have to figure out what to do with it. When all's said and done, this was only meant to be practice for when I started the detail work on my wife's layout.

Looks awesome Tony!! I like the trees, are they pre made or did you make them? Really great job Tony. Maybe you can put in your train room for display or for pics of your trains.

Thanks
Scott

Scott,

Thank you and the trees are pre made - nothing to do with me at all. Good idea for using it as a place to photograph my trains too.

Here are a couple of more shots a little closer:

This time with the house in place. I'll try to get some more with a train etc and some better angles.

Fantastic work Tony! Now lets see some trains on it.

Your practice work would be my masterpiece!

Thanks for showing us your project!! makes me want to get some progress on mine.

Looks like you could use trains from the 40's to today with this scene and pull it off. lasm

Next pictures, which hopefully will be better, will have a train on it. Don't doubt yourself Louis ... doing scenery is not like doing electronics (wiring, decoders etc) there really are no rules or rights and wrongs. Give it a try, you just might surprise yourself :)

Thanks lasm, I have just gotten a couple of F7's from Casey that need to be photographed and shown.

Yep, yep. Keep going. I'm interested in your techniques and materials for the scenics.

Thank you. The diorama was put together using scrap and left overs from my wife's layout, for something to do and practice in getting the scenery down for when I complete my wife's layout.

I used the following materials:

1/2" ply (base board)
1" and 1/2" foam as the base for the scenery
45 minute Plaster (powder)
Plaster cloth (for covering the inclines)
Woodlands Inclines (for the road and rail)
Woodlands paints for the base terrain color (earth color)
Scenic Express ground covers
Woodlands ground covers
Woodlands pre made trees
Behr Acrylic paint for the river
Liquitex Medium Gloss for the river

50/50 mix of Elmer's white glue and water
Elmer's white glue full strength
Woodlands Scenic cement for the placing the trees

The buildings are completely scratch built.

Hope this helps, material wise.

That's my hold up with art work Tony, "no rules, rights or wrongs"!

I have it on my to do list to give it a go, but its about half way down the list. I'm hoping to get to it this winter, after Christmas, next year some time. :)

Louis,

Looking forward to next year then. The one thing I enjoy about doing scenery is that it allows you to create whatever you want and envelops a number of skills. You have the creative element, what you perceive through imagination. It involves wood working, in my case, or model building in general. It requires some form of skill when it comes to painting, be it hand painting or rattle can painting or airbrushing.

While doing scenery has no "specific" rules or rights or wrongs per-se, there are elements that do have specific requirements - rights and wrongs. Scenery is not just one thing, it is the incorporation of a number of things, and that is what makes it interesting for me.

One of these days I will evolve to learning (or trying to learn) those aspects of Model Railroading that do have rules. Those elements where there are rights and wrongs and where the wrongs may well have disastrous results. The last two words of that sentance is where my apprehension lies, and is the foundation for my hesitation. If you make a mistake doing scenery, it can be fixed. You make a mistake with wiring or the fitting of a decoder, there may be no fix other than replacing something and starting again.

Update with additions AND Train!

Hi Guys,

As has been requested - a "train" on my diorama, so here it is, straight from Mr Casey (cjcrescent) the brilliant F7-A and F7-B.

There is also a couple of additions to the diorama including a crash guard along the road, traffic sign for the road and speed sign for the railroad; although, the maint crew really need to get out there and do some tree trimming :)
