Oh, and I think you're right that using an 18 awg from the panel to the bus defeats the purpose of using the 14 awg bus.
-

Funny, I just did this recently. The 14 awg is indeed a pain to get into the pcp panel track wire contacts, but it will work. Try to use a short run from the track wire contacts to the bus. You can connect this short run to the 14 awg bus easily by using those screw on wire nuts.

Is there a device or tool that will help me make straighter cuts with sheet styrene ?
I'm making a building with three sides (for a backdrop) 24" wide , 8" deep using 6"x 17" Evergreen styrene.
I've had a hard time getting the edges straight. I've scored the styrene using a sharp Xacto...

Dry wall tape. Apply drywall mud (spackle). Sand it down and no more seams.

Am I the only one who had problems getting N scale to run reliably? (an I'm talking about modern equipment-manufactured recently- not the old stuff that I understand was not very good). If so. I wonder what I did wrong.

I started in N and recently switched to HO. The reason? I found it much more difficult to get my N scale locos to run consistently. In my opinion, HO is much more forgiving in this respect. If the trains don't run, it's just a static diorama. Also, I really wanted sound in my locos. This is...

I've found another maker of a static grass applicator machine Here it is. http://www.grasstechusa.com/products.htm
It's less expensive then the Noch one (about $140.00).
Does anyone have any experience with this other one? Does it work as well as the Noch one?
Thanks.

I want to build a modern warhouse with metal/corrugated walls but a flat roof in HO.
I want it to be about 175 scale feet long x 60 scale feet wide.
The flat roof is going to present a problem. How can I prevent it from sagging in the middle, short of making a bunch of tiny columns to hold...

If you can't even fit a decoder where will you put a speaker? Sounds like the frame will need extensive milling. My advice is send it to a company that does DCC installs and expect to pay.
By the way, the least expensive sound decoders are the generic Digitrax ones which are about $50...

When you wire an electrical bus under your layout there are actually two bus wires, right? One positive and one negative (or one for each of the rails)
Thanks.

Oops, you're right. Confusing this post with another about converting a Bachmann to DCC.

Right, if this is one of those that has the pins right on the board (as opposed to at the end of the wire harness) and the problem is that it won't fit under the shell, then you want to get rid of it and use a decoder that does have a wire harness which will then allow you to move the decoder...

Look on TCS's website. They have a bunch of photo guides to decoder installs in various locos. There may be one for your loco. Doesn't matter if your installing a Digitrax instead of a TCS.

What do you mean it won't fit? If the loco has an 8 pin socket and the decoder has an 8 pin connector it should fit. Sometimes you have to press down a bit firmly to get the pins to go into the socket. Also is it possible that you have the connector turned the wrong way? Pin #1 needs to go in...

Thanks.
I thought the curved pins at the bottom of the couplers had something to do with it? If not, what are they supposed to represent? The air hose between the cars?

Without lifting them off the track that is? I am building a small switching layout. I've to the track laid, but no scenery or structures. Nonetheless, tonight I did an imaginary operating session.
Then I realzied that I don't know how to uncouple the cars? I tried a piece of styrene rod to...

I plan to use Evergreen styrene corrugated siding sheets.
They come in different spacing sizes i.e. the space between the grooves- .40, .60, .80, etc.
Any suggestions as to what looks right for HO?
Also, who makes roof top details ? (vents, hvac units, piping)?

I can't find anyplace that has these in stock. GWM has a website but calls go straight to voicemail and are not returned.
Are they still in business? Anyone know of a place that stocks them or has some they'd like to sell? Thanks.

Just take a spackling knife and spread the bead of caulk out before you place the track. That way it won't ooze up between the ties ( I think that's what you're saying is the problem)

Mal,
Fantastic work! I'm also working on a layout using Mindheim's "How to build a small Switching Layout" as my guide and your experience is very inspirational.
I wanted to ask why you decided to switch the track plan around so that the lead in runs from right to left?
Also, what colors...
