    S curves are bad

Those Bachmann Heavyweights have a nifty coupler that twists when the trucks turn. That probably helps them make it through the sharp turns better than my crappy con-cor cars. -Art

    S curves are bad

I have a shelf layout with inner and outer loop connected on one side by 2 pairs of turnouts. Much of my rolling stock will make the 1st turn but they derail as they hit the second turn. Short diesel engines make the transition fine but the Big-uns don't like the turns. A smooth sine wave S...

    Best sound!!

Back EMF is quirky on digitrax SDH164D decoders. If you blow the horn in diesel mode the engine slows dramaticaly. In steam mode it works properly (at least that's my experience) Only option is to turn off back EMF  -Art

    wow super cheap

Motley, My Lionel HO Verand'a are excellent pullers. They have dual motors inside and have die cast shells (plenty of weight). If you see one on ebay I think you would like it. I have pulled 14 or more cars with ease (no grade). The QSI sound is also quite good. -Art

    wow super cheap

The new QSI Titan U decoder with stereo sound would be awesome in there. Tony's trains has them for $99 and comes with the sound project of your choosing and 2 included speakers. My 2 Lionel HO verandas have QSI sound and dual speakers they sound really nice (and that was before the stereo...

    Best sound!!

Blue box engines are a good place to start. There is a learning curve involved and with the blue box kits if you screw up you won't be out much money. Practice your soldering before you start. I am hooked on sound as well but I opted to use inexpensive Digitrax SDH164D's. They run only about...

    tooter goes big time...

I suppose you could pile some dirt under the outside rails to "bank" the turns. I would be afraid that if you rely on braking to stay on in the turns then someone may not apply enough braking and hurt themselves. Just a thought. -Art

    Heljan Overhead Crane

I drool over the one at my LHS every time I go in there but I can't justify the expense. I have a non operating container crane that a friend gave me. -Art

    Heljan Overhead Crane

I contacted my LHS who still has one on the shelf unused. I gave him a link to the ebay listing and told him to put it up for sale there. It's been on his shelf for several years. -Art

    Ho Scale Display Case

That's a good idea maybe I will do that. 2 narrow groves would seem better hough just for the flanges, easier for me to find the groves. A single wide groove could be made just wide enough for the wheels to sit on top and the flanges could hang down into the wide groove. I didn't think of...

    Ho Scale Display Case

I made 2 display cases to house my Grandfather's and Dad's Lionels and accessories. I got glass panels to keep the dust out but my HO collection is getting too big to fit. I've been collecting quite a collection of UP behemoths. I think I will make one similar to what you have and make...

    DDA40X Shipping

Nothing special on the underside. Each set of trucks has a central pivot point. I have flex track so I am not sure exactly what my curve radii are but it runs on my outer loop but jumps off the track on my inner loop. My guess is about 24" on outer loop and a bit smaller on the inner loop...

    DDA40X Shipping

Hmmm 28" radius. That stinks. I guess I will havta stick with my Bachmann DD40AX. No way I can fit 28" diameter curves on my shelf layout. It's kinda pricy anyway. -Art

    MRC Prodigy Express

Joe, I don't have any DC engines anymore. I converted all mine over to DCC and sound. I have about 7 engines with Digitrax SDH164d decoders and include sound for about $39 each. Not the sound quality of a Tsunami but better than no sound at all plus all the benefits of DCC. If i want quiet...

    MRC Prodigy Express

For $30 more I would recommend NCE Power cab. I got mine at model train stuff for $149. Easy to use, user friendly, handheld cab and will work with JMRI if you decide to do this in the future. Mine will run 3 sound engines at a time in HO scale. I will let the Zephyr guys chime in with their...

    Applying stripes

Masking tape works well. It may take a couple tries to get the stripe the way you want it but as long as you take your time and get it "just right" before spraying the paint it works well. I have read about "frog tape" is supposed to be even better. I have not tried it yet. If you pull the...

    latest MTH rumor

I got an email from Trainworld and they have an MTH HO N&W J class 4-8-4 on closeout for $499. Even at closeout prices that's too rich for my blood. The matching 5 passenger car set for $439 is "closeout" priced as well. That's $88 a car.....outrageous. -Art
