I'm modeling the Northern Pacific in a freelanced manner, meaning most of my locomotive roster has "Northern Pacific" on the sides and is either N.P.'s actual equipment (Proto 2000, Stewart, Athearn F-7s painted, decaled and detailed to be N.P. F-7s) or kit bashed to look like N.P.'s equipment. The locale, is general mountainous terrain like; but, not a specific location in western Montana). So, I like Northern Pacific and mountainous terrain. But, I'm not a stickler on specifics.

Hind sight being 20-20, were I to start over again, I would model either the N.P. in the Butte Montana area, following N.P.'s route through this area. Or, I would sell off all of my HO stuff, do a bunch of research on it's operating area and model the Rio Grande Southern in Sn3.

What is your favorite Prototype and why?

I have several but, don't model them..I like the PRR,C&O,Santa Fe and UP.

In N Scale I can model the Southern,N&W,NS transitional era(locomotives lettered for N&W,Southern,NS) and for modern I can do NS and CSX.

In HO I stayed with CR in 89/90 and my Freelance Summerset Ry(78/79)...

Conrail, CSX, BNSF, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific & a few others.
I model Freelance Modern. The name of my Train Empire is the GAP.
Gulf-Atlantic-pacific.:D

Santa Fe is kinda a fave of mine, but I honestly don't model it...I have one or two engines from them, but I model a freelance RR my own too, NBR the New Berlin Railroad :)

The Northerm Pacific RY was certainly one of my hometown railroads and is certainly one of the reasons I chose N.P. It also stands to reason a hometown line would be attractive to most everyone! I live around 35 miles form where the N.P. and G.N shared tracks and the G.N. later B.N. had thracks through my home town, which were torn up in the early 1980s.

Santa Fe! I have always railfanned the Santa Fe. Grew up near Santa Fe tracks as a teen; I currently live about six miles from the former Santa Fe line between Ft Worth and Gainesville TX. I watch trains at the former Dalton Junction north of Krum TX. It is now a junction between BNSF and KCS. I'm about 20 miles from the Alliance yard which is also a good spotting venue. This is all BNSF (Big New Santa Fe) now. Gotta love all the Warbonnet paint schemes. I currently model Santa Fe between 1976 and 1990, but have plenty of equipment from 1950 to 1975 stored away.

I grew up on the LIRR, but my heart belongs to espee, and their cascade sub., and, of course the local regional shortlines they owned/sold, NWP....to the NCRR.

Oh, ask a easy question..

Honestly though, its the BN, though I have a fondness for the BNSF as well as a primary loyalty. Close second though is the Ontario Northland: Don't ask me why, I couldn't give you a great answer, but the line has always been one that has always grabbed my attention probably for the power it was running in the 1997-2002 time frame: FP7's and SD75's - with a van - in the same consist for the win!

I honestly don't know how anyone can have A favorite, there are so many wonderful things about all of them. I guess I would have to say my least favorite is the Norfolk Southern because they not only discontinued the steam program but purposely sabotaged the working locomotives so they would never be able to run again.

I like the union pacific as soon as I first seen that big American flag on the side of the engine I just went with the union pacific.

Did you know that the Southern serves the south?

1. Southern
2. Northwestern Pacific
3. Petaluma & Santa Rosa
4. Ocean Shore Railroad

but San Francisco's Municipal Railway pays the bills.

What railroad

I like the Wheeling and Lake Erie. It runs thru Medina, Ohio where we live. I have severala W&LE loco's.

Alas, it is no more, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy: "The Burlington Route", the "Q", "The Way of the Zephyrs", "Everywhere West"!! The Chinese red paint scheme was rivaled only by the Santa Fe.

50% Maryland Midland, especially in the 80's when they had a dinner train in addition to all the other stuff, and I actually got paid as a mechanical conductor! :D
Then 25% Western Maryland (East sub, much the same route as Midlands!)
then 10% CSX and 10% D&H and 5% B&O or C&O:rolleyes:

Well since I railfanned them a lot growing up the RF&P is tops. Many fond memories of my dad and I or my grandfater and I going trackside in northern Va to watch them in action. But I fav the Southern, N&W, C&O/B&O and DRGW.

I model in HO and is freelanced. Was loosely based on the DRGW in CO, but had a change of heart and switched it to loosely based on the N&W in southwest Va/WV

I am a Burlington Northern Nut, especially the early years when there was a collection of NP and GN equipment on the same line, also because I have the pleasure of working on both former GN and NP territory (BNSF) and they are still alive, despite the different name the GN and the NP are still alive because of the union contracts, because they dont expire, where there is former NP territory, seniority moves are governed by old NP rules and in areas where the GN operated, seniority moves are governed by old GN rules

Many of you refer to your favorites by their initials. I think we all know who the B&O was. However, some of the more obscure names will escape those of us who may not have ever been exposed to them. Can I ask that when introducing them the first time, you spell the name out? Photogdad, I'm sure I will be embarassed for asking; but, who is the RF&P? I had to ask Brakie who the CR was and that was a "Dah moment"!

Maybe these obscure name initials; or acronyms, could be turned into a game! I'll start: This is a railroad that has been mentioned a time or two in the magazines as a line that would make a great model railroad: It's the MN&S?
