My son and I are starting to construct a 4 x 8 HO layout. We plan to use flextrack and turnout primarily. We have built the bench and used plywood and Styrofoam. I have been looking at the Woodland Scenics ReadyGrass Vinyl mat. It looks quite interesting. Their demo shows how to lay out streets, wet the material, scrape the textured material off, paint and stripe etc.
My question actually relates to the track roadbed. Is there any functional reason why we couldn't/shouldn't cover the entire bench with the vinyl mat, determine where the track/roadbed will be laid, use the process described above to scrape the texture off the vinyl, and glue the roadbed to this vinyl surface?? I realize the aesthetics may not be the best, but for me it seems much easier than cutting in the grass mat after the fact.
