Hey all. So I thought I'd do the Atlas "up and over in 4 x 6" layout because it looked like a lot of interest in a pretty small space. Two levels of operation, some turnouts, etc.

Today the layout showed up, and I test fit the pieces together. Using Code 83. To get the upper level of operation, the set uses Atlas' Pier Set. It looks like it could be troublesome, I have two questions.

1) Is it going to be too flimsy just to have the piers support the weight of the trains? Should I build something up under the track in between each different individual pier so that it will be more solid as the train passes over the track? There's 40 some piers total.

2) How do I wire the upper level of track? Does it even need to be wired? I'm using DCC, but I'd sure hate to just rely on those rail joiners...

Thoughts? Anyone attempted anything similar to what I'm about to embark on?

Thanks!

From railroading 30 years ago I remember the set. It's sturdy, but there are a few things to remember.

1. There are grade issues which some engines will have trouble with if the pieces aren't spaced far enough apart. I don't know if the manual or perhaps the layout design will show proper spacing. I think the max grade for model railroad engines is 4%, but I think most people aim for 2% to be gentler on the engines.

2. If they are too far apart, you will have an issue with the track sagging. I'd rather put them too far apart and support them.

3. Be careful about putting the piers on the tracks. Too much pressure will cause the plastic ties to break.

I don't know anything about DCC, so I can't help with that part of it.

Good luck!

Thanks!

Thanks all for the replies. I feel much more comfortable moving forward knowing that I should support the track. I just had a feeling that wasn't going to be a good situation.

On a side note: that layout is very similar to the original gorre and daphetid. look there for inspiration.

Awesome! That's actually kind of what I had in mind, with a big steel bridge instead of the girder bridges that came with the set. I'll definitely be looking at that to customize my own feel for this layout.
