I have found Proto 2000 but cant seem to find one in SP. Does anyone make an SP unit?
Any thoughts?

Atlas maybe? Either way I didnt find anything on Ebay under SD7 or 9 with the SP paint.

Athearn does them, but the hood isnt the correct scale width, they were originaly made when motors were much wider than today. Athearn did both the grey and red "bloody nose" paint scheme and the Black Widow version over the years. Watch ebay, thats about the best place to find one of the proto SD7/9's currenty or an Athearn.

Here is a nice trio of Athearns that have been superdetailed. http://cgi.ebay.com/SD9-Southern-Pa...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 There are also several other Athearns on there including a custom painted "tiger stripe" version that hasnt been done as a factory paint. Broadway Limited also produced SD7/9's and can be found on the used market or even new in the box still, not sure if they did SP though. The Athearns are the most affordable these days if the hood width doesnt bother you. Mike

The hood width doesnt bother me but I was looking for something newer with DCC or DCC ready. I have several Athearn BB locos and love them but want something a little more high end.

Only ones that will be DCC ready are the Broadways that already have sound/dcc and the protos, athearn hasnt reissued the SD9s in the Ready to Roll line yet. I bet they will in time, I think Rail Power Products had a SD9 shell with correct width in thier line up that Athearn/Horizon purchased. Your just going to have to camp out on ebay and look for one or you can join the hoyardsale group over on yahoo, you can put a wanted post up, someone might have one that needs a new home. Mike

If you're trying find a factory painted SD9, the Athearn BB is still you best best since Athearn made thousands of these over almost three decades. I don't believe that there was ever an HO P2K SD7 or 9 in SP colors. I think Atlas had one run of SD-7's in the SP bloody nose scheme. The only other company I know of that's producing the SD-7/9 series is BLI and they also don't have one in SP colors. Your other option, assuming you are not set up to paint and decal the engine yourself, is get one with the features you want and pay to have the job done by any of the experts here who offer custom painting.

What scale? As far as I know Atlas has only done the SD7/9's in N scale. In HO, Proto 2000 did the SD9 in the Black Widow scheme. The only bloody nose SD7/9 will probaby be the Athearn.

John.

I was looking for HO. If Broadway ever made one with sound in the Bloody nose scheme that would be perfect.
On Joe Fugate SP site he has several SD9s on his pics. Are those Athearn or custom made?

I found this at my LHS today. Is it an SD9 or 7? I dont really know the diffrence.

It says Life-Like on the bottom so what is it? A proto 2000?

There was no box or directions so Im not sure?
It runs great and looks great to me. Just what I was looking for and it was only 19 bucks. I think I got a deal but you tell me?

Next step is DCC so I have to figure out if I need to wire it in or is it DCC ready?

Removed the shell and this is whats inside.

What decoder would replace the light board?
I looked on Digitrax and didnt see a replacement.

That's a very early P2K SD-9. The one real visible difference between the SD-7 and SD-9 is the position of the classification lights. The SD-9 has them mounted towards the outside top of the hood and SD-7 has them mounted in the middle top of the hood. It's a great buy at $19. The circuit board looks like it just a lighting board so I suspect you'd have to pull that out and hardwire a decoder. Sometimes it's not problem if the motor is already isolated from the frame. If not, it will be a lot more work but it can be done. The other issue is cracked gears and axles, whcih affect almost 100% of this model. If it doesn't tun very well, it's probably got a cracked axle or gear. They are easy and cheap to replace so don't let that stop you from buying it if it's otherwise OK.

The NCE DA-SR will drop right in, and the new Tsunami boards will drop in also if you want to do sound.

Will this decoder support 1.5 volt lights? I want to wire those in instead of the 12-15 v bulbs. The site says it will support LEDs but then it says they want you to put in a resistor? Cut the V notch out? I hate it when I dont understand something?!

I used to have a web site with direction on resistors and diaodes but cant find it. There are alot of them with directions but no pics. I need pics!

The DA-SR outputs are all 12V. You'll need a resistor for each bulb. Depends on what milliamp bulbs you use. There are charts for this in most DCC manuals.

I purchased the DA-SR yesterday then noticed today there is a 8 pin plug for DCC on there already? Should I just use the DA-SR or something else?

I'd suggest junking the factory board. I did with all of mine. sandwiching a decoder board on top of the factory board is a pain and has to be just right or the shell won't go back on right, and there's nothing on it that isn't already on the DA-SR board. Just make sure you insulate the bottom of the decoder so it doesn't short to the frame.
