What is a Prototype Railroad

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

To expand on Ken's answer, it could be any real railroad. That includes narrow gauge, standard gauge, currently operating railroads, former railroads now abandoned or merged with other roads (also called "Fallen Flags"), and former "real" railroads like the Nevada Northern that are now operated as tourist lines. I guess it even includes lines that run on former branches of larger railroads and now only run as tourist railroads but were never railroads in their own right. The Napa Valley Wine Train comes to mind. There are a lot of different types of prototypes out there, all waiting for someone to model them. :)
