Hi all, I have been experimenting with the amount of weathering on the rails and ties on my layout.
I tried to find a good level of weathering. Here are two pics showing the test sections:
It´s starting to look good, but the difficult part is that when the weathering is looking good in real life, it doesn´t look as good in photos..... I have found a medium level that I think works.
The rust is a bit more reddish live, but I think it looks good

It is to have some more weathering on the ballast and then some weeds and grass also....
It looks great to me sir. Very realistic.
I painted each tie in a different colour and added some raw umber and pastels to the rails.
It sure looks a bit strange before the tie and ballast weathering is applied...
I applied a wash all over:
A bit of drybrushing and some weeds between the rails, then we´re almost there!

All I've got to say is""WOW". Fantastic job on the weathering & the tall grass & weeds. If you hadn't told me that these pictures were a model I would say it was REAL.
Nicely done! Is this airbrush or bristle brush work...or both? if you airbrushed this, what airbrush, and what size needle/nozzle?

Thanks Larry! Then I know I´m on the right path here....

I had painted the tracks and ties before ballasting using my Badger Patriot 0.2 mm needle. Then I added some rust on the rails with it after ballasting. All the painting in these pics are made with water based artists oils and #0 and #2 brushes.
I took another pic now that shows the before and after very well:
Very Nice !!! I like the final result
well looks nice thats my 2 cents!
What scale are you modeling in? The variety of tones is absolutely fabulous, and I love the light moss growth in the first pic.
WOW - that looks really good. Can you give more details on the steps like what pastels you used and how you applied them as well as what wash did you do.
Thanks,
Dave
That is some amazing detail! Keep up the good work!
Outstanding! That's the kind of dirt and grime I'm used to seeing here in the South.
Looks really well done!
