A couple of simple, cheap details make a surprising difference in the appearance of this engine. First, I made a headlight visor from leftover 1/8” brass tubing. Then the blank smokebox door bothered me, so I filed down the head of a small nail to make a round number board. Total cost: zero. The cab roof was painted with Model Master Acryl British Crimson. Decals and weathering completed the job.

Due to tight clearance between the tender circuit board and the plastic shell, use the thinnest decoder you can find. The Digitrax DZ123 will not fit unless you are willing to sacrifice the top weight. I installed a TCS Z2, but still had to trim some plastic from the underside of the shell to make it fit. I understand the Lenz Silver Mini will also fit.

Nice job, Steve. Good example of how some cheap upgrades and paint can really improve the look of a stock engine.
