Over the years I've noticed a small US flag on the side of the nose of some BN (green/black) locos. Firstly, was this paintwork specific to certain locos? I'm pretty sure I've seen them on SD's. I want to apply them to my Atlas GP-40's and I understand they may not have been applied to the prototypes but I'm using a bit of artistic license this time.

Does anyone produce a decal for the flag?

Regards,

I think they started appearing about the time of the first Gulf War. Photos are the best in determining what locos got them. Some of the GP40s did.

Thanks Paul,

Good to hear the GP40's had them. This suits my era also: early 1990's before the SF merger.

Now I just need to trawl through the Microscale decals (assuming they have them....)

Regards,

looks like this is the only Microscale sheet with a flag: #87-459

You need Microscale set #87-716. Jerome also has this posted as his third link.

It has the proper flag style used on BN locos.

I found a picture of BN GP40-2 #3056 with a flag.

Santa Fe also added flags to some of their locos during the first Gulf War. I clearly remember seeing them on the then brand new Superfleet locos. But pretty much every loco type could be seen with a flag during the early 1990s on the Santa Fe.

Microscale has the Santa Fe style flag in these sets; #87-637, #87-619, #87-369, and #87-29.

Jerome, Kevin & Matt, thanks for the replies guys. I'm placing an order tomorrow! One thing I really respect and respect from you all is your patriotism towards your country and the different ways you display it.

Cheers,
