Using card

If you want to stick with card, which is kind of a fun material to work with, you can get a big sheet of art card (Strathmore is one brand) at an art supply for not a whole lot of money.
Good stores will have a variety of colors and textures. Art card still needs to be handled carefully but it resists warping a lot better than cereal boxes.
If nothing else, you have a pretty decent stand-in structure before you go whole hog building a really detailed one. Good mockups can last a long time on a layout.

Mike,

I had a chance to get to my LHS and check the size of the I-beams I used: They are from Plastruct # 90516.
