Trackwork begins on SP's Portland Terminal

The Chief
Over the past few weeks we have been finishing up with benchwork, running wires and setting up for tracklaying.

Saturday and Sunday were milestones in the current layout project with track being put down on the main and the arrival/departure yard. The layout is circa fall of 1958 in Portland, Oregon and will feature a large yard (Lake Yard) as if SP operated it, SE 2nd Ave District (Fruit District), SW Front Street (Heavy Industry) and East Portland (Industrial) as well as an interchange with Portland Traction (under defunct wire, but operated by an SW-1). A side function area will be an ice dock as well as 1958 version of a deramp for the SP Overnight trains.

Lake Yard will feature a 3 track arrival/departure yard, and a 6 track classification yard with the longest yard track near 10 feet. The A/D yard will be able to handle around 54 cars.

The Class yard should hold about 74 cars.

The total layout industry load will have spots for around 80 cars at industries.

In MR fasion here are the details;

Size: 11x24
Locale: Portland, OR fall 1958
Scale: HO
Layout Height: 53 inches
Construction type: Dominoe 1x4's
Track: Atlas code 83, MicroEngineering code 70, Atlas code 100 (staging)
HO Cork for mainline, otherwise tabletop
Switches: #4 and #6 combo between Walthers 83 and Atlas Custom Line
Grade: 4% to and from staging yard
Control System: MRC Prodigy

A big thanks goes out to the team that has helped over the past few weeks on getting the layout to this stage; Steve Carter (DelMonteX), Ted Curphy (funnelfan), Brent Strong (speent).

At any rate, here are a few photos of the beginning of trackwork.

2. Looking east to the future yard site. Lines were transferred to the tabletop from CADRAIL prints by Steve Carter.
