I know that most new locomotive's are purchased from the manufacturers by class 1 railroads and then when their superseded their sold to other class 1 railroads or short lines rather than being scrapped & broken up. Does anyone know of a website or any other resource where you can track the history of a particular locomotive?

On the left side you get choices of where to start. For a GP38-2 UP #2017 I went to locomotive model and then picked GP38-2, then to UP models then to #2017.
There it is as of 2001 in North Platte, NE.

Well I guess the database is only as good as the information in it & the information I'm looking for seems to be lacking lol.. Ho Hum...
