I'm trying to weather the top of my GP9 but I'm not sure what the top of the locomotive looks like in terms of wear and tear. I've searched Railpics but can't find anything definitive. I'm especially interested in the top of the cab. It seems like this rusts out faster from what I *think* I can see. Anyone have any good pics or references?

A few things come to mind: a round roof is going to have rust streaks running from the peak in the center to the outer edges. The edges where the water collected would have lots of rust at the seams, some might streak down the sides. There will be soot and perhaps burned paint around the exhaust. You might see some streaking lines radiating from the fan exhausts. The paint on the roof in general will be dull as the sun will fade it over time; locomotives weren't kept in garages much....obviously the degree of wear and rust will depend on the age and overall condition.

hope this helps.

That's more about photography of trains, you're better off looking on http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/ for more angles of locomotives

These pics might help you out. They are of a GP7.
