Well as much of you know. I love Amtrak. Well I love the EMD's that work Amtrak. Well a lot of you seen P40's coming out to play. A lot of people are getting them confused with the P42DC's.
So im goin to explain them.
The P40 has been upgraded to give the outpit of a P42. That is the only thing the Grove shop has done besides restore it back to operational. They have also upgrade the singal I believe its called module or something in that nature for Automatic Train Stop. The F59PHI's also getting this upgrade or basically every engine that come in for Overhaul due to the Metrolink crash with the engineer passing a red signal. Im not sure what the software do so can not give a better understanding of it.
The P40's also getting there brakes upgraded due to some reports on how the P40 wasn't compatible with the P42's in consist.
There were no outside modifcations to the P40DC except putting the Phase V paint.
The P40DC's are now being put on certain trains for testing purposes. Once the test are done the trains will be sent to free up the P42DC's on the autotrain route.
There will be also 1 sent here to the westcoast for back up the Starlight and Zypher.
I also heard but im not quite sure yet that 2 will be sent for Downeaster service or Cascades.
But with the talk of HSR up in the air and states getting money for trains. Im not sure if the P40 have a chance on those two corridors. Especially with Cascades with those states buying new Cars they might have already place a bid for a new motive power. Only time will tell.
