I am just getting started, and by "just", I mean I have purchased nothing, have very littler room for a layout, and have no idea (beyond a general layout design) what to do. I have an attic that I will be using temporarily, I have a drawn layout plan that is open for suggestions and ideas. I ask that you lay it on me. What tips, suggestions, etc., would you give to someone in my situation. If you'd like to see my design please contact me through here.

The one thing I always suggest is to head down to a local hobby shop, locate the model train department and walk right past it to the model cars. Trains are just so dang addictive! :D

Seriously tho I'd say start with a good brand name to avoid frustrations. A few extra bucks spent now saves headaches later on.

As for a trackplan keep it small and keep it simple. Ask questions and lots of them, no matter how minor they seem to be.

Get to know someone else who is starting out or already into the hobby, that's a huge help. Hanging out here is you're first step well taken!

Welcome aboard!

You could start by building a diorama. Even a really small one could introduce you to structure building, track laying, scenery construction, and backdrops. It can be a good way to decide which facet of the hobby you enjoy most.

My little layout is three dioramas stringed together in a 8sqft foot print! Start small and allow room for growth later on as your skills get better!:)

Please, first read the Beginners Guide at www.nmra.com. This will give you a basic idea of the different options you have available and some ideas for types of layouts. It will be well worth your time to read it all the way through.

I'm a new guy to, A little in front of you but not by much this is all new to me also, a big help to me was the design program "xtrkcad" I got from this site Link--->" http://sourceforge.net/projects/xtrkcad-fork/ " and the manual http://www.xtrkcad.org/Wikka/UserGuide

I came up with a layout 3'x6' not going to fit every thing I would of liked but its a start I'm limited on space too, I've learned the hard way from my RC helicopters buy thing that will support you in the future and leave room to grow its a big waist of $$$$ if you have to buy some thing you already have because you went bigger or some thing like that
