Survey: Do you catalogue your collection?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I made an Excel spreadsheet, where I have the columns:

scale
manufacturer
description
reporting marks and number
date purchased/received
place of purchase
special information (decoder type for locos, if the car has a load or is custom)

I have a bunch of undecs I've been working on for months, and when I find a picture of the prototype I want to do, I end up putting that number and reporting mark on the spreadsheet so when I order decals later, I know what I'm getting.

I have color coded rows for things like needs completion, bad order, on order, want (when the Athearn and Atlas announcement comes in January but the car doesn't come until December, I have forgotten about it), and out of service.

Dallas Model Works has a nice setup to enter the same info and more, is free, and is online. However, with the duplication and the amount of rolling stock (I have roughly 400 HO cars and 55 locomotives) to be entered into the system.

Albeit, I have purchased duplicates (all Walthers cars) even after the list. 2 still need to be renumbered. The greatest risk of duplicates I have issues with are tank cars.
