Hey guys,
i'm thinking to order some white SMT LED's to take my try at ditch lights. and i think there are plenty other uses for these on layout.

i'm looking at lot of 200 for 35$ shipped (if you noticed the white ones are over double the price of red ones.)

0603 package - 1.6mmx0.8mm
obviously i don't need that much but its 28$ for a hundred and the package of 50 is 16$ ,almost double the price. so does anyone want to split?

or a long shot- anybody ordered already and has extra he wants to resale?

i already have 100pcs of green/red 3mm bicolor LED's on order. anybody needs any?

Why not just get these?

Same thing and cheaper then the 200 hell you can get 300 for the same price.

Western Star, how are you wiring the Christmas lights? I was just going to run a set through a bunch of structures but am interested in any better suggestions

No other wiring needed, no capacitors or much a ma-call-its
No, you need whatcha-ma-call-its. But that made me think, there has to be something built into Christmas light strings - maybe if I cut out the sockets too then the whatcha-ma-call-its are built in. I'll ad that to my to-do research list.

The Christmas tree strings I've used have the resistor right in the plug, with all the LED's wired in parallel. I suspect it would be too expensive (and take up too much space) to have the resistor in each LED socket. I did see a set at Lowe's today that said it used 12 volt LED's. There's no reason why they couldn't use 12 volt LED's so I'll have to check them out when they go on clearance.

keep in mind that 0603 SMD leds are tough to solder to without a proper low wattage fine tip soldering iron. if they overheat while soldering you will destroy them. I learned that a long time ago.

But there are many uses fr them such as Camp fires, Welders, headlights, Interior lighting,Etc.

last year after Christmas I bought 3 sets of the 60 lite LED lites for $1.50 ea. & then a week later I bought the same lites for 75 cents a set. When I put them in my buildings I had a lot of wasted bulbs because the buildings were far apart, so, I could only use about half of them. So, I cut out the lites & added some wire so I didn't waste any. Now, I've got enough left over for another set of buildings. The resisitors are built into the 110v. plugs. Also, you have to use all 3 wires when you lengthen the sets.
This year I'm doing some testing to use them in engines, etc. w/the correct resisitors. I did find out that ea. LED in the string runs on 1.5 volts & they have to be in the correct negative or positive line. I did find sets of the mini LED's(10) that have a battery box attached & all of them operate on 2 double A batteries.

thanks Mark.
i figured 1.6x0.8mm would be really small. i have variable heat output weller station and what they call "narow screwdriver" tip on the pen. i admit i never soldered SMT parts but i see others that accomplished this so i assume it is doable. i might destroy firs couple but largely it might work out.

Larry, i a string of white ones and 4 color ones. and it is a super deal but they are not small - 5mm giant parts, and so far i haven't seen bipolar ones. other then that - good idea

broke down and ordered bunch of LEDs. my other projects will require some anyways
100pc. of each listed below incoming (shoud be here within 14 days):
3mm Warm white - supposedly good for headlights, will see if it is not to yellow.
3mm red/green bipolar - searchlight signals
0603 white (SMT)
0603 red (SMT)

if you want to get a couple or a dosen from me , let me know.

Nice site, Dave. The 10x12 graphical display board looks like an interesting project to simulate LED billboards. I had to stop looking around or I'd be there for the next two hours. :)

They do have some nice products and not bad prices. I've not ordered from them yet so I can't speak on service or anything other then the listed price. If anyone orders please let us know how they are.
Dave

yeah, it is a nice site as well,
but for now i think i'm good on LEDs.
on top of everything Mark G sent me some SMD ones (thanks again!) he had lying around, micro wire and some SMD resistors as well. i have plenty to play with now.
