No, but they may have borrowed one for a trial....many roads borrowed or leased the locomotives of their competitors to see if they could solve a problem for them.

The only time Southern Ever had a 4-6-4 was the time that they leased former Canadian Pacific 2839 from a group to operate mainline excursions from 1978-1981. The tender was lettered SOUTHERN and the cab was given tradition southern lettering underneath the window. She was retired from the Southern in 1981 due to the fact that she was not strong enough to handle the mainline trips on the Southern. With the 2716 due out of the shops in Birmingham at any moment her and T&P 610 were returned to their rightful owners in late '81. She is now stuffed and mounted in California of all places. Look up "Southern 2839" on Youtube to see videos of her running
