two questions from a novice
ONE: the crescent limited engine numbers -1393 – 1394 – 1395 – 1396 – which one of these ran through charlotte, north carolina
and
TWO: I have read there were four shops – maybe one in charlotte – maybe ivy city engine terminal, but, where were they located
thanks so much, rdeal
The main shops were in Spencer NC, maybe 20 miles NE of Charlotte. Even though there were several Ps-4s painted with the Crescent Limited sign on the tender. Any Ps-4 that was ready would be used to pull the train to Washington or Atlanta from Spencer. The locos would run from Washington and get changed in Spencer, or from Atlanta and again change in Spencer. At the shops located at the terminals in Atlanta and Washington, the engines would get serviced, etc before returning to Spencer with another Crescent.
Spencer was the 1/2 way point between Atlanta and Washington.
