I know I should not have done this out of order but this is my first real layout with scenery so I wanted to do a small section to make sure I don't get too far if I have no clue. What do you guys think? I still need to do some finish work to cover a few bare spots and go around with a brush and touch some stuff up but I'm not worried about that right now

My camera stinks. The rocks are actually a burnt umber with several other dark washes but you can't see it in the photos. Oh well.

nice start, though I would finish getting your track laid and tested before finishing the scenery

Yeah, this is the only section I am going to do. I just wanted to give it a shot to see how I'd do. All of the tunnels are accessible from the back and I already test ran this section.

I think you've got the right idea but there are a few suggestions I'd give you. First, don't use lichen, It doesn't look realistic and gets dried out and crumbles. Second, your trees are way too small for the scale of the tunnel portal. You need some big, tall tgrees right at the tunnel. You can use smaller trees further up, where forced perspective will make them look better, but always keep things in scale when the viewer has two points of comparision.
