A few years back, I was asked to build the benchwork for a custom HO scale model railroad for a young man who was 6 years old. His parents were very well off and wanted the best for their child. I was amazed at how adept the young man was when running his trains and how he physically handled them with utmost care.
His father requested that I build the benchwork so it could 'grow' with his son. I came up with an idea for the legs of the layout, got the design approved by dad and away I went. The lumber is all 1x4 poplar, assembled with pocket hole screws. The legs were turned from blanks of hard maple. I made a receiver box for the legs to support the layout. The leg slipped inside of the box and allowed a 1/2" diameter bolt to be pulled and dropped down to the next hole in the leg to raise it higher as he aged.
The last photo is a shot of my friend and mentor, Chuck Ellis. His layout has been featured in Model Railroader magazine in the past. He took care of the track work and scenery for the layout.
