Home Depot and Lowe’s along with other places that sell flooring give these away as samples. They work great for small things and the back has type of foam to keep it from slipping. Also cut them into squares and you have some coasters

I buy the cut outs from countertops for work surfaces. You can get them for a few dollars at home improvement store. Just beware cutting on them will leave scratches and dull your blade quickly.
I cover my workbenches with masonite. I’ll then cut a leftover piece about a foot square, and use it as a cutting and drilling board. Using a cutting board keeps the masonite top nice for a lot longer.
