Sd-30?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

How many have built the "what if" SD-30 that was in that model railroad magazine long ago? I'd like to see a shell for the SD-30 offered to fit the SD-35 chassis. I'd buy a few for my River Run. :D

Never built one but I thought it was an intriguing concept. As far as a shell for an SD-30, they are already available. It's called "kitbashing". :) I think the chance of a company offering an RTR SD-30 shell is as close to zero as you can get.

There's a guy over on the American Rails Forum talking about making one for sale! :D An article on how to do one was done in the April 1995 Issue of Model Railroading. I just bought a backissue online tonight!

As River Run mentioned, Mr. EM-1 on the American Rails forum is thinking about making a resin shell in HO.

Also on the ARF is my kitbash of a SD30. You may note the crude shell in the photo....I have redone the shell, and will post a new photo tonight.

I have always wanted to build something like an SD30 but take it in a different direction than the published plans and SD35-based models that have been done. I think Jim Teese did a high nose Southern SD30 some years ago, article in DING I believe.

Anyway, I always thought the GP30 roof would look good on a longer locomotive. However the SD40 with it's porches already has one distinctive feature, and the SD45 also has the flares, which would make a GP30 type roof extremely top heavy.

Enter the SD45-2. I actually imagined a demonstrator type loco built on the SD45-2 chassis, 20 cylinders and all but with a GP30 roofline stretched to fit. I never got far enough in building it to get an idea what it would look like, but I did start working on a Rail Power SD45-2 shell back about 12 years ago, and had cut some Bachmann GP30s up to get the roof line segments. I just decided it was too much work for a completely freelanced loco and that I'd rather put the effort into something I could actually use for the fleet.

A couple other "what if" models I have considered is an Erie Lackawanna SD50 or SD60. If the EL had remained intact and continued buying high horsepower 6-axle diesels, it would have been logical and the SD50/60 would look good in the EL scheme. And another crazy idea was the "slab with a cab", an SD60 high nose in the black NS scheme. Or even crazier, "slab without a cab" SD60 cabless B unit, but Santa Fe built something similar with their SD45-2 B unit. But the SD60 body lacks the conventional dynamic brake overhang so it has even more of a monolithic look. If figure if I ever build an NS SD60B, in 2010 Dave Bowman will come flying out of it... look out!!

Andy, if you go over to the American Rails Forum, under the SD-30 topic there are links to JPGs of the SD-30 article, fully readable with photos.

I've thought about creating a SD60T (SD60 tunnel motor). But I've never have gotten around to it, yet.

I've always thought that if the Nickel Plate Road had still been around maybe Alco would have lasted a bit longer. NKP was a big Alco buyer. I would love to see a wide cab M420 in the NKP scheme.

Hi, first post:)

Here's mine so far, the Southern 6306 carried over to NS, then GRS ended up with it when it was buying all those SD45s.

Now that's really creative! Bravo!!! I can't wait to see more! Guilford supposedly has the Nickel Plate's only GP-35 #910 Guilford #210.

Thanks!
GRS gp35s 209, 212, and 214 are all low nose non-dynamic. I'm not sure on their heritage.
I'm still trying to find a cheap Athearn SD9 donor so I can finish 701. But then, GP40-2W #504 and SD45 #684 are also in the works:)

BNSF Dude, there's both a GP40-2W AND a GP40-2LW. Beyond that, I love the Pan Am Failways, er Railways idea. I just got one of the Athearn cars. I love the logo.

jbaakko is correct, so far as I can tell. I honestly don't know what the differences are, if any (?), however, I'm just following prototype photos. I don't much care for the Canadian Cabs myself, but purchasing an Atlas SD26 (643) and GP40 (378) both lettered Guilford Rail System as opposed to Springfield Terminal and Maine Central respectively dictated a later time perion on my layout.
As to despising the GRS/PanAm ideology, I agree, however, it's what I grew up watching, and being stuck in the south now, it's a reminder of Maine:)

Arent they called GP40-2LW's? I'm no Guilford expert, as I pretty much despise the idea of Pan Am railways...
