Instead of using the RTS software, why don't you try XtrackCAD. Its a free download from here; http://sourceforge.net/projects/xtrkcad-fork/ and has many track libraries available to use including Bachmann, whereas the RTS software only has Atlas products in it.
It is a little harder to learn than RTS, but is a far superior program. If you follow the tutorial here http://www.xtrkcad.org/Wikka/BeginnerTutorial and use the demos, it does become easy to use. And after drawing the layout, it will even let you run trains on it.
A lot of the guys here use this program, and you'll find any help needed here as well as the yahoo discussion group.
