I have a little under 20 cars so far, all of which are Atlas except for about four which are Athearn. The detailing is fine on both and unless you knew the entire product line-up you probably wouldn't be able to tell who made what in this regard. One thing that stands out is that Athearn uses McHenry style knuckle couplers. They're compatible with the Accumate knuckles that Atlas use, they just aren't fantastic. If I ever lose carriages while pulling a long train up a hill the failed coupling always involves a McHenry.

I don't have any athern cars yet, but I am not opposed to them and will get some eventually.. I have my favorite as micro trains because I live near the factory here in oregon and have also sold to them as a hardware supplier to their machine shop years ago, so I know their business very well and what they are about. (It is about quality)
Atlas is also a big favorite and I have a lot of older stuff with newer micro trains trucks and coupler conversions as well as some new items.
I also have some KATO passenger cars and a few concor sets. Kato is very high end IMO. Both are very collectable as well.
Then there is my bachman items with converted mtl-couplers/trucks...
They are not as detailed but the average person can't tell the difference due to the n scale size and they run good and I have owned them forever and cant depart with them. Not as valuable- but I certainly don't care.

Micro trains have the best detail and are great runners if you can afford them, all the others work well, of can be made to. I like micro trains because the boxcars can have the door open with a hobo sitting in the doorway on an empty. I own some just for that door option. My roster has cars from just about every manufacturer.
