Recently on eBay I bought an unpainted GP-18 so that I could put an old Proto 2000 shell over top of it. The train could not run anymore because I think my dad buggered up the wiring in it attempting to fix it but making it worse in the process however the flywheels and motor are intact. Could I use the motor/flywheels and put it into an Athearn so it doesn't go to waste or should I not bother because of difficulty in it fitting?

What kind of drive is it to begin with? If it's a Proto 2000 drive train, why not just order a new chassis from Walthers and and reinstall the motor and drive in the new chassis? Better yet, tell us exactly what you dad buggered up in the wiring. It's usually possible to fix such things without losing the whole locomotive.
