Though ugly, I thought it might possibly be my duty to expose the insidious downward spiral that is one mans N scale rolling stock addiction. Addiction = that frightening lack of self control that somehow overtakes innocent, seemingly decent individuals, ultimately leaving them sometimes pennyless, and strewn along side an ash heap of scattered plastic bits, loose wheels, and broken dreams. :(

Yes I buy N scale. Sometimes I need it....and sometimes JUST BECAUSE I WANT IT. Can't explain it really......guess it's just how I roll (doing his best Barney Fife tough guy impersonation).

Have 36 cars on my layout....and these....well they're just "extras". Those two columns on the left are all prestigious names like: trix, bachmann, model power, roco......and I dumped a load of cash on em' too....nearly three bucks each. And them other ones on the right.....don't even ask how much on those beauties. Atlas? Who can afford Atlas? Walthers even? Microtrains? Have I lost my mind?......(uhh.....yeah!) :D

Yes...I live life on the edge. Don't get too close......I might take you down with me. Turn back while you're young and still have strength.......or you might end up living in a van down by the river. :p

Ah, but someday you might have a larger layout and need all of those extra cars. I have over 350 cars on my layout. I even have some that are not on the layout, probably several dozen.

You guys are sooo understanding......and the idea of hundreds more cars.....yes....I do think that would help. Glad you thought of that Brasshat. I might make it through this....maybe...maybe.

railfan, I don't quite know how to break this to you.................there is no known cure for this affliction! There are ways to assuage the urges, but they are only temporary. Don't despair too much though..............you have lots of company.:)

It happens when I can't work on the layout. I know, buying these cars on sale will help me. And I better make the most of my shipping charge, so tack a few extra cars on to that order. I've broken the N scale addiction, now it's an HO addiction.

Yes, there is no cure.......except when you own every single car ever made.....and then you still would have monthly relapses when the new models come out. I started out modeling MRL, and reached a point where there were no new releases and I had virtually all the old releases.........after a couple of months of no new cars, I decided I needed to do some Milwaukee Road stuff.....300 cars and 50 locos later I'm reaching that point again......there's a few road numbers I don't have, but I've got at least one of every model I've been able to find, going back into the early 70's. So far I'm resisting going down the NP or GN roads (I stick to Montana/Northwest railroads) but I just realized I've been picking up some SP&S stuff......At least there isn't a lot out there for SP&S. AND I started putting together a couple of G scale trains. I guess it ends when I die!!!

Thanks for giving it to me straight Bob.......sometimes you've got to be cruel...to be kind (in the right measure....of course!). :p

I'm not seeing the problem here either. It's a lot cheaper than your RC stuff! I don't know how many cars I've got but I have 10 of the Axian boxes full.

I am over 1500 and still do not own a layout. What does that say about me?
Hmmm, I would have said I've got that beat in spades but just checked my inventory and the spreadsheet says I've only got 850. I know I only started recording in the spreadsheet in 1996 so three decades worth are not there, but those were not big buying years. To be missing 700 doesn't sound reasonable. Now I have to investigate and see whats up with that. -- Add another project to the list.

Of course I'm more addicted to the locomotives rather than the rolling stock, and I KNOW I have a shortage of caboose.

Yes you are right, the whole thing is a tongue in cheek farce........I don't have near enough as anyone else for it to be a genuine addiction yet. As soon a I get a paycheck coming in this could change though.

You guys are only somewhat afflicted. I dropped over $50K on my train room (no train costs included) so I would have a place to put my railroad. The room is 32.5' x 32.5'. Mainline is over 160' long and not complete. I host monthly ops sessions for a crew of up to 11.

HI railfan, a true collector of freight cars buys three of each, one to run on the layout, one to save as a collector's car, and the third to trade some other crazy person who thinks he needs more cars. ha ha this is a hobby, no rules except one, HAVE FUN AT IT. My wife will never know how many I have, and when I croak, my son gets em all, so she still won't know.

Here is an opportunity to have an instant N scale collection!
