So im looking to purchace some grabs and i see there are 18" and 24" im assumin im gonna need the 18s but what are the 24s used on?

any help would be great so i know im ordering the right ones i need.

I have seen that in some cases, the longer ones are used for the vertical grabs or in certain special locations, while the shorter are in the more common places. Check the prototype to make sure.

As Ken said, the 18" drop grabs are the common ones used on engines. The 24" grabs were more often used on freight cars in the days when cars had grabs instead of ladders. Some F and E unit's used the long grabs for nose access but they were pretty rare on engines.
