bigB What coupler did you use ? On the Kadee site I can only find instructions that include cutting off the existing couple pocket and replacing with theirs. Not very appealing but the set that were on there are already broken so it just sits on a shelf.

Chris,

Ive used Kadee #5 or #148 whisker. Im sure the scale whisker coupler would work too. No issues. Works great.

Well mine must be different because the couple box is too narrow to fit a standard Kadee coupler in unfortunately. Here is the link to the instructions on the Kadee website detailing what it is asking me to do : http://www.kadee.com/conv/pdf/ath43.pdf

Chris,

Im talking about these types of cars...

Kadee 5s and 148s fit right in the Athearn coupler box on mine. I used 148s (whisker coupler). No modification.

Ok, mine had just never been out the box, and after thispart of the discussion, I just had to look.

This is not a GREAT fix, but what I JUST NOW did, was file the points of a #5 kadee down, to make it more "round." Still cant get the brass centering plate in the pocket, might try to clip one down here in a little while and see how that works. without the plate, leave lots of slack and wont center on its own, but gets the car working and on the tracks.

Ahhh. Chris and BigB, I think I have this figured out. Looking in both of your links, and looking up mine. BigB, your KCS car, I think it is not the Genesis series. I too have a couple of Athearn RTR 2-bay hoppers, not Genesis series, and the coupler pocket is full size. Chris, our Genesis series hoppers are a lot closer in Athearn product numbers that the KCS's product number. And in the pictures, there is not the factory installed air line on the coupler pocket.

Interesting, here is a link to the one I'm referring to. It looks like mine may be older and maybe they changed the pocket, or I'm totally confused which can happen at times :)

Chris,

I think yours are Genesis. My Trinity hoppers are the newer RTR releases, which are essentially the same in detail except the bearing hubs dont rotate with the wheel and, well, I guess they readily accept a Kadee coupler. Nearly the same price now too.

I have a few Genesis boxcars and I think I looked at changing the couplers to Kadee from McHenry but didnt get too far with it because of the milling/fitting issues.
