Proto 2000 GP18 issue

My Loco has a constant "clacking" sound as it runs it gets louder under load any ideas where is coming from? Is this a Known issue? what is the repair? and where do I get parts?
 
the axle gears cracked? i think that you can pull the cover off of the bottom of the trucks and inspect the gears. i know the gp30's had this problem. heard it was also an issue with other proto blue box units. it is the gear that holds the two wheels together. you can get the replacements, you can also get the athearn sd-40 axle gears. they are alot cheaper and easier to get, if that is what is wrong. they just push together.
 
LifeLike Proto 4-axle locos from the earlier years are notorious for having cracked gears. It's usually not a question of 'if', but when those gears will crack. For that reason anytime I buy an early P2K unit, I automatically pop off the bottoms of the trucks and swap out the factory axles with Athearn axles before running it on my layout.
