I've got a question about the Milwaukee Road post 1955 Hiawatha train. I'm thinking of building a Hiawatha or cities train to run on my HO layout. I've got a few cars so far but need more. I'm still debating though if I should get more or not since I'm not a huge passenger train fan. The idea of having a passenger train just for some variety though is tempting. If my research is correct, the post '55 hi had an express car, 4-6 coaches, super dome, diner, parlor car, and sky top lounge. Does anyone know if this is correct, and what order the cars go in? I've looked online and no one seems to know specifically what the order is. The other question, if I was to build a cities train, what cars would I need to build of a city of everywhere? I'd like to make it accurate as possible. 99 percent of my rolling stock is Santa Fe but I do like the Milwaukee as well. I'm going to start stripping some F7s this weekend to paint Milwaukee and probably be buying a caboose to run behind em. My dad has tons of books on the Milwaukee which have caught my eye recently which is why I'd like to add some Milwaukee stuff to my collection. Any info would be great, thanks.

You need to be more specific than "post 55" because the consist changed frequently, but you have the basics correct and the cars in the correct order. There could be additional express/storage cars and RPO's on the headend. Somewhere in there, the parlor cars duties were handled by the skytop-paror cars and the parlor cars disappeared......unless the train got too long in which case a parlor car and a second diner might be added. During this time, the Morning and Afternoon Hi's were also combined with the Olympian Hi, and there were sleeper cars in the mix.

For a City of Everywhere, you'll need an awfully big layout. It contained some 22 cars at it's height, and was pulled by an A-B-B-B-A set of E units. That's about 25 or so feet of train!

Here are some possibilities:

I agree with Espeefan about the size of the Cities trains.......the morning and afternoon hiawathas ran with the consists you listed, and ran around 10-12 cars. There were other Hiawatha trains that ran with even fewer cars.See if you can find some info in your Dad's books

Thanks for the replies guys. I definitely don't wanna have a 25 foot long train. Thank you for all the specific consist info listed, that really helps. Having a small layout will probably make having a city of everywhere impossible. I have found pics and searched thru my dads MRHA magazines too but they weren't as specific as the info posted above
