Plate designations.

I figure this would be the best area to post this question. Can someone explain what the Plate designations are for on the side of frieght cars? Such as Plate F, Plate C, etc. I couldnt find anything on Google. Is it something to do with the amount of weight the car can carry?

I don't have the specifics, but believe they denote the clearances the car will clear.

Thanks for that link. It appears Bob above was correct. It refers to the size and clearances of the car itself.
